WIP: Starting work on the Sisters

Now that I am back from my trip, I can start to focus on other projects.  A few come to mind but the one I really want to get started on is my Sisters of Battle.

Way back when, I backed a kickstarter for the Toughest Girls of the Galaxy 2.  Well I finally got my pledge of 30 regular troops, 10 jump pack sisters and Celestine. The concept art was awesome. I even liked the 3D sculpts even though they were in battle heals.  Now that I have the actual models I am not sure how I feel.  While they are close to the 3D versions I never noticed how most of them are on one foot.  Not only that these women are really thing and posed awkwardly.

While I am glad they were much cheaper than if I went with GW.  The fact that they are plastic is just awesome.  My big worry now is if GW makes some new cooler more battle worthy sister will I regret backing these.  I guess time will let me know.

I plan on building as many as I can and then start painting.  Let’s see how that works out.

more Grot tanks

So this week I had a surprise arrive in the mail.  Three new non Forgeworld grot tanks. I was so excited I had to assemble them. (sorry Sisters)

So back in November the site Models and Minis had a sale.  I saw these tanks at half the price of 4 Forgeworld tanks I decided to order them.  I was planning to use them during our big Apocalypse game. After not getting a update on when they would arrive for a month I reached out and contacted the company.  After several back and forths and promises that they are on the way I finally gave up on ever getting my tanks.  Then they showed up.

Ignoring the long delayed shipping, I really like these models. The sculpting is really good and the flash is easy to clean off. They seem a bit small compared to the Forgeworld  models but they are just as scrappy and cute.

I kitted most of them with rockets because that is how I usually field them but I might try to magnetize them.  This would involve trying to break the super glue bond I used to attach them.  It is risky but who know when I will want a bunch of grotzookas.  Everyone swears by them.  I also am thinking about the low AP of megablastas. I just don’t know if the chance of a get’s hot is worth AP2.  Looks like I will need more field tests.

Once I decide what to do with the guns these guys should get some paint. It should be a pretty quick turnaround.  The hardest part will be deciding which color to paint them.

WIP: Seraphim

I am sorry that I have not been very active with my blogging the past few weeks.  Both work and school has really gotten in the way.  Today I have my built Seraphim squad for my sisters of battle army.
These are my favorite models form the raging heroes line. they are all pretty dynamic and well detailed.  I can't wait to see how they will look when finished.

They come with 2 pistols each and each set came with one pair of hand flamers.  This will allow me to field almost a full squad with two of them wielding the flamers.

I am a bit worried about how they attach to the base. They all have just a single point of failure that could easily snap if dropped.  I also found the thin wrists snap quite easily as well.  I have repaired all that broke but they are the the durable plastic that GW uses.

The reason I only have eight seraphim is because Celestine needed her two Geminae Superia. Using the sword bits from the normal troops I have created the saint's body guards.

I love the poses on all of these models.  It is going to be a real challenge to paint them well.

There you have it.  with these completed I only have a few sisters left to build and I can start the long process of painting them.  This week I plan to get a couple test models done so I can start painting in earnest.

I still need to get some vehicles for them.  I want to get four rhino types and three exorcist types. Maybe I can find a deal on the internet for some.

Have a good week.

Showcase: sister of battle alternative

After assembling all of my new Sisters of Battle, it is time for me to actually paint them.  With the help from my wife, I laid out several different choices and this scheme was the winner.
I started with a white base coat.  This is something new to me but I new it was going to be a light scheme so I didn't want to base then, apply a second base to paint the lighter colors on then finally the colors themselves. I might try a wash on the white to pre highlight the parts to give me more depth on the model.

The blue is a hobby store acrylic metallic blue.  It is a light lighter than the blue I use on my necrons.  It does have a metallic sheen that does not show up well in the images. The yellow has a darker yellow under layer with a light yellow pearl acrylic paint.

I hope the preshading will help to highlight the model.  I might try to edge highlight or maybe drybrush to make the edges pop a little more.  I just don’t want to cover the metallic shimmer.

After talking with my wife about the bases, we were scratching our head about what to do about them.  After trying to explain that they should have some semblance to terrain we came up with a couple different options.

One would be an autumn flock while the other would be snow bases with some ice crystals.  The autumn flock would be very colorful but might clash with paint scheme.  The snow base will be an adventure since I have not done snow before.  Either way, these women will certainly look unique.

With all of the news coming in about 8th edition, I wanted to look back on my record in 7th.  My group has one last hurrah left and that will be a big apocalypse game.  Since that won’t affect my records, we can look at how I did this edition.

Over all I went 30 wins, 36 losses, and 2 ties.  Clearly well under .500.  I can see some trends in my record.  Maybe it will help to break it down.

The Good

The two armies that I played well were my necrons and genestealer cult. I feel that the necrons are one of the top armies in 7th. With their special rules in the decurion, they tend to be hard to kill off.  I tried never to be "That guy" and never played with a decurion list. Even without that crutch they were a tough shell to crack.  The wraiths and lychguard tended to be the stars of the game when I played.

What can I say about the genestealer cult?  If you read the youtube comments, I lack any tactical skill playing them.  Even then, I am 6 and 3 with them.  Their abilities to pop in and out of the playing field and assault some of those times makes for a challenging matchup.  The sad thing is I never got to play against Kabbala’s slaanesh army with them.

The Bad

More than a third of my losses came from the orks.  If you listen to the internet, you would know that they are considered a lower tier army.  I think it is more of how I played them that hurt me.  I think if I went with more bikers and less mek guns I would have done better.

Another problem is the type of army. Both the orks and the tyranids are horde armies.  I tend to just rush across the field and smash face but this edition really punished you when you chose to ignore the objectives.  I think I have become better at keeping this in mind as I play but it is still a bit of a problem for me.

The Ugly

The skitarii and the guard are a surprise to me.  While I think I only played the guard in big multiplayer games, I thought I would have had a better record. There is not much I can can do when my army is only a quarter of the larger force.

The skitarii, on the other hand, have given me trouble.  I am not sure where I have gone wrong.  It might be that I have poor target priority when playing with these guys. On the other hand it might be that I am using the wrong units. The only thing that eases my opinion of my record is that three of these loses were from the highlander tournament at Shorehammer.  The army was new and I didn’t have use of several of my usual units to play with.  I am curious to see how they will fair in 8th.

The Forgotten

The one army that never saw the field this edition was my tau.  I don’t know if it was all the hype saying how powerful they were or just because I had new stuff to play, I just never got around to getting them to the field.  I have thought about letting them go.  I did once before but in the end the anime look to them just draws me back.  I still want a ghostkeel and the forgeworld riptides. Maybe in the new edition they will see the field.  If not it might be time to kust keep the cool stuff for display and get rid of the rest.

In Conclusion

The best part of all these games is that I enjoyed my time while playing them. This has as much to do with who I was playing against as to which army I was playing.  I am eager to see how all of my armies will fair in the new edition.  No matter which come out the strongest, I know if I have a good group of guys to play against it will be time well spent.
Have a good weekend!

Feelings, nothing more than feelings

Last week, I looked at the past and how I did in 7th.  Today I think I will take a look at what we have seen for 8th with three of my favorite factions: Tyranids, Orks, and Genestealer cult.

Now, I know that until I see the complete rules for the game and the factions, this is all guess work.  These are just my gut feelings here. All of these thoughts might be just thrown out the window when the books finally hit.

Tyrainds

Starting with my favorite faction the Tyranids, I am hoping these guys got a boost.  Reese in his focus gushed over the swarmlord.  I have never been a fan of the swarmlord since I liked the huge swarm of bugs with a few mommies following along to help them out.   I would be more interested in how the normal tyrants have fared.  Will the winged version be the go to version still?  Time will tell.

Speaking of the mommies, I am unclear about the where the tervigon stands.  I have seen that it can summon more gaunts if you paid the price for the guys when creating the army.  I have also seen that they might be able to replenish gaunts that have died.  There is no mention if this needs to be from the summoning pool of points. If they can add models without the summoning points I might just keep running them.  If not, I might have to switch tactics.

Lastly, we have the genestealer.  These poor guys have had it rough the last couple editions.  It looks like they might become a feared unit again.  They sound nasty in large packs with the ability to charge after advancing.  This could make them very dangerous if they make it into combat.

I was kind of sad that there was no mention of the maleceptor, haruspex, or toxicrene. Reese really only mentioned that the pyrovore was useful if used in a drop pod. All four of these units were relegated to the shelf in 7th so I hope there will be some use for them.  More than likely they will keep their place on the shelf.

Orks

The Orks have always been a fun army to play. From the faction focus it sound like they helped out with the mob rule returning to its former glory. This will make running big squads of boys possible again.

The gorkanaut preview make me think he might be worth picking up finally.  Along side of him they said that killakans and deffdreads will be seeing the bord as well.  As a player with 7 kans, one dread, and a mega dread I am looking forward to seeing this come true.  I would love to expand my kan army.

I was sad that there were no mention of 'ard boys. From what it looks like the painboy now just passes out 6+ feel no pain.  With the bigchoppa only getting -1 rend I will probably still keep the  powerklaw for my go to melee weapon though the -1 to hit will really suck. Maybe we won’t have to depend on the klaws for killing tanks anymore but with all the 3+ saves around maybe we will.  I know nothing makes my boys cry more than charging in with 40 attacks into some marines and only taking out 2.

I was happy to see the KFF still gives the 5++ on shooting attacks.  I am eager to see if the warboss WAAAGH rule is only once a game and restricted from turn 1 use.  The change to ‘Ere We Go to reroll failed charges instead of just one die is welcome as well.  Lastly, I read that flashgits guns are less random now and are a straight -2 rend with a chance to shoot again.  Pretty nice.

Genestealer Cult (GSC)

One of my newest armies and brothers to the tyranids are my GSC. I was eager to see what changes were coming for them.  The first thing I saw was that they still have cult ambush and can come out of the shadows and ruin someone’s parade.  The non-deepstriking placement is very familiar to GSC players but there are some questions that are left unanswered.

The first question is will the GSC be able to bring in all the ambushers on turn one via cult ambush or will we have to place them all in tactical reserves and hope the come in? The next question is if we have to use tactical reserves then how do we determine when do they come in? After that, I want to know is do we still have return to the shadows?  Lastly, do we have the numbers beyond counting rule?

All of the questions deal with my core playstyle.  Without the ability to pop in and out and redeploy and replenish it is going to be rough for my GSC.   The good news is I am still learning to play them so I can change my tactics easier than my other favorite armies.  The bad news is I will have to rethink how they will play on the battlefield.

Another nagging question I have is how they talked about bringing allies.  To me it sounds like the Leman Russ and Chimeras have been removed from the list and now I will have to bring a guard detachment if I want to use those options.  This leaves the goliaths as our only transport.  I will have to get another one if I want some protection for my neophytes.  Then again without the neophyte and Leman Russ tax I can fit more acolytes and metamorphs in.  Maybe it is not so bad >_<

I was also sad to see that the auto pass lookout sirs has been removed and replaced with a 4+.  This is the first I have heard of a lookout sir in this edition, so maybe it is better than everyone else.  I agree the old Patriarch with 20 ablative wounds is a bit much.

On the psychic front they have retooled mass hypnosis.  This will make it easier for my troops to get into combat safely.  I need to see the rules for denying the witch rolls.  If the power is easy to cast like a 5 does the denier just need to beat a 5 as well or do they have to beat what I rolled.  I have a feeling that it will be hit or miss. I feel bad for the Necrons, Tau, and Orks who have limited or no psychic defense.

Whew! That was a lot.  As you can see I am not all rainbows and sunshine but I am not all doom or gloom either.  I think this will be a good edition and after some growing pains a fun way to play.

Seraphim

I continued to paint up my Sisters of battle.  This time I painted up a seraphim.  This could be a superior or one of the Gemini siters that go with Celestine. With the new edition I am not sure what it will be.
I used the same paint scheme as the regular troops with the exception of the wings.  Here I added a darker color in the recess of the wings to give it a little more detail.

I also added a wash to the corset and painted the buttons.  I plan to go back and add these details to my other sister models.

Finally, I added a highlight to the yellow cloth.  This helps give the model a little more depth.

I am waiting for some blue crystals to come in before finishing the bases.  I am hoping to add them with some snow effects to brighten up the bases.

8th is Here!

This weekend 8th edition came out.  with all the leaks and previews that have spilled out I have had a good look at this new game.  Now that I have the book in hand I am working though the rules and units on my own.  This bring me to my first dilemma: Toxicrene or Morkanaut.

For my graduation I received a $50 gift card to a local hobby shop which is a good down payment on one of these models who were vastly improved in the current edition. So which will I want to pick first Toxicrene or Morkanaut?

Morkanaut

First up I want to look at the Morkanaut.  I always like the Kustom Force Field(KFF) which will give my mob some protection as we WAAAAAAGH!! across the field. The 5++ helps out and a 9” bubble is quite a large area.  He can also carry a small unit giving them some more protection.  He can also do some damage in combat.  He starts with either 4 S16 -4 AP D6 damage hits or 12 S8 -2 AP 2 damage hits or a combination of the 2 in combat.  This seems like a decent stat line for a single model.

Where he falls down is in shooting at BS 5+ (standard ork shooting) he doesn’t get a lot of shots to make up for it.  He has a blasta which is one shot and gets hot and the kannon which is D6 shots and gets hot. The gets hot is the same as last edition but most of the other factions got the option to make the plasma safe. With my luck I will lose most of my wounds just to me rolling 1s. I have killed many executioners with those dang gets hot rolls.

The Gorkanaut has similar stats but loses the KFF and a different load out on the range weapons. His big gun is 3D6 shots S6 -1 AP 1 damage.  This can be a bunch of shots or just 3.  He also has a Scorcha which automatically hit D6 times at S5 -1 AP and 1 damage.  The AP and strength is worse on the Gork verses Mork, but the auto hits and weight of shots I think will make up for it.

I like these mini stompas and intend on getting one and adding it to my ork army.  The question is do I want to get it now or will the toxicrene be a better addition to my Tyranid army?

Toxicrene

The toxicrene is the monster it should have been last edition.  It now has 12 wounds and a 3+ save. He has 2 shooting attacks.  The first one is D6 S3 0 AP and D3 damage which re-roll wounds and ignore cover.  This is a decent attack the re-rolling helps the S3 and ignoring cover helps the 0 AP.  Not stellar but decent.  His second one is D6 S7(lowering to a 6 then 5 as he gets hurt) -1 AP D3 damage. This also gets to be re-rolled. It can also be fired when locked into combat.  While both are in short range I think that most people will want them in combat asap.

So his shooting is decent but most of the time you want this guy in hand to hand.  Unwounded he can move 12” and if you have the swarmlord or get onslaught off then this movement is even farther.  In combat, he starts out with 6 attacks with his massive lashes that are S user -1 AP D3 damage and a rule that makes him always attack first. He will attack even before chargers! So, if he charges and lives through the turn, on the opponents turn he will attack again before the chargers do.  Right now this is the only unit in 40k that does this.  I want to get this guy.  He is a beatstick!

If that is not enough, he can also deal damage when he gets wounded in a fight. At the end of a fight, he has a chance to deal a mortal wound on every model in base contact with him.  Lastly, when he dies he has a chance to lash out one more time rolling a 6 on a D6 will cause 3 mortal wounds to each unit 3” from him.  If you can get this guy into combat, he can really do some damage or he will be a big distraction giving the hormagaunts and genestealers time to get into combat and start nom nom noming away.

This is a hard decision.  I am leaning towards the Toxicrene since it will be more useful right away.  I still want to get the ‘Nauts because they look cool and might be a good part of a fun list.  I am going to have think on it some more.

What do you guys think?

WIP hormagaunts

$

In 8th edition, the role of the lowly termagant has changed slightly.  Sure they are still cheap little guys that help bubble wrap our larger monsters from charges.  The difference now I don't need the never ending supply of models since the tervigon doesn’t make new units unless I set aside points for it.  This means that I don’t have to worry about not having enough models when it is time to make more guys since I am only replenishing models that have died.  So, when I found a fresh box of termagants I thought why not makes some hormagaunts.

The two units are very similar.  I even have some hormagaunts that I modelled as termagants.  So how hard would it be to go the other way. I found out it is not too hard.

First up I cut off the front arms.  I tried to make the cut as flush as I could.  I then tried to touch up the chest and arms from where they were molded onto the front arm a gun.  After that I took some leftover scything talons (I admit these are probably from some genestealers so a little big) and cut off the ball joint so it can join with the flat socket.

I find the result acceptable.  After I paint them up and I mix them in with 14 other friends they will fit right in.

What do you guys think?

A New Era has Begun!

This weekend I had the chance to get in 3 small games of 8thedition.  We each played 1000 points army from a different faction.  Even though one game does not give a complete picture of how well or bad and army or unit is, it is a glimpse of what it can do or downfalls it may have.

Game 1: Orks vs Dark Eldar

The horde is back.  I ran a couple small (20 boy) squads and the addition of Warpath and the Warboss Waaaagh! Really helps these guys out getting into combat and dealing some major damage.  I might try running them in a battle wagon to help get them up the field even quicker seeing that most opponents will try to stay out of range for a first turn charge.

I also Proxied a Mega Dread for the Morkanaut.  I had planned to use this guy to give me the 5++ save while running across the field but the way my opponent deployed I had to split my forces.  The Morkanaut did alright, although my opponent didn’t have much to take him down.  It took 3 turns to get it into combat but once it did it was brutal. The shooting was very lack luster.  It softened a couple of raiders before charging in.  I think if my opponent had some dark lances he would have been in trouble.

Game 2: Sisters vs Guard

In the second game I took a very tank heavy IG list.  I had 2 hellhounds, 3 chimeras, a manticore, and a tank commander in an executioner.  I was very disappointed with the executioner seeing it went from 2 small blast to a straight up D6 hits.  I was hoping for 3D3 since the small blast normally became D3 shots but for some reason they took away some power.

The star of the show was the manticore.  It seemed to do the most work for me.  Coming in close second were the hellhounds.  I do believe I will swap out the heavy bolters on those for more flamers.  The ignoring to hit is big in this edition. This goes double for guard since they only hit on 4s and when they move it goes to 5s.  You will not be putting out enough damage with that kind of accuracy.

The one thing that I had going was durability.  Even damaged my tanks kept going.  In the end he just didn’t have enough fire to bring down all my targets.  If we went on to another round he might have stolen that game away from me.

Game 3 Dark Angels vs Tyranids

The last game saw my new and improved bugs just dashing across the field eating anything that got in its way.  Again I proxied a unit for the toxicrene and while he did not do a lot of damage he did hold the enemy at bay until the genestealers came in and wrecked face.  I did like the upgraded exocrine.  The longer range made it easier to reach targets and shooting twice made sure things died.
I am eager to try out the swarmlord and the trygon tunnels. A turn 1 charge can be an awesome thing.

The faster bugs will help out where we were weak in the last edition.  With the rumors of the malanthrope only being 90 points I really want to try an old one eye bomb.  Delivering 2 carnifex and old one eye into the ranks no later than turn 2 will be a cool site to see.  Pair this up with a flying tyrant, genestealers, or toxicrene and the enemy might not know where to prioritize its firepower.  My bugs will be like Cookie Monster on a plate of cookies…. Nom nom nom.

Over all thoughts

The game flows nicely.  I have to remember my psychic phases if I have them.  At least now they are not too long with only a handful of spells and the rest defaulting to smite.  A couple of big changes are the fight phase and how many wounds are all over the table.  I feel with some practice the fight phase will become less cumbersome.  I think I need some wound counters to keep track of wounds.  I have a couple of ideas and will post them on here if they pan out.  I also saw a few nice ones out there if my ideas don’t work out.

A minor complaint I have is all the randomness of the weapons.  That D6 might be awesome! It also has an equal chance of being crappy.  If you roll like me, you will see the crappy side more than the awesome side.  I wish most of the D6 were changed to be more like the dunecrawler.  The dunecrawler's neutron laser has D6 damage but a roll of 1 or 2 is considered a 3.  This really nullifies the bad luck rolls.   Then again, this is 40k, random is always a major factor so I really shouldn’t complain.

So in conclusion 8th edition is fun.  I look forward to playing more games and getting the hang of all the changes.

Hobby Time: DIY Wound Markers

$

With the release of 8th edition we have seen an increase of wounds on most of the non infantry models out there.  Most of these have more than 6 wound making them harder to track with our standard dice.  We could use mulitple dice or different dice to keep track but I think maybe a wound counter might be a better solution.
Since I want my hobby money to go toward new models I hesitate to get fancy wound counters, so I came up with a quick and dirty counter that will do the trick for me and you guys as well.

First up I used a circle punch to cut through some card stock boxes I had. Scissors work just as well.

I started with creating a bunch of  2" pogs out of old boxes. These were from the box of some yummy lasagna.

With the basic pogs cut out I needed my dials.  You could do these by hand but I used PowerPoint, so I will include the steps I used to make them

First I inserted a circle shape onto a blank slide.

I changed the Height and width of the circle to 2.5".  I tried 2" but found out when I printed the slide they shrank but if I used 2.5" it was just right.  I also made the border 2pts wide and selected no fill.

This gives you a circle that looks like this.
I then added a TextBox on the slide.

I typed 1 through 10 with a tab between them for my 10 wound counter.  Make sure you tab between all the numbers or they won't be spaced evenly.  Also tab after 10 so it is spaced with 1
after that you will want to apply the transform to make the number circle the dial. I did this by going to format, then to text effect, then transform, and finally selecting the circle follow path.

I then changed the height and width to 2".  This lets the dial fit nicely in the blank circle we made eariler. Once that was done I moved the dial onto the blank circle until the guides showed that it was centered.
After that I made a small circle and aligned that in the center of the dial.  Then copy and pasted as many as I could on the slide and printed them out.  Once printed I cut them out.

I then glued these onto half of the pogs that I created in the first step. Using a punch, I punched a hole on the edge of the pogs without the glued on dial.

Then using an hobby knife I made a hole in the center of each pog.  I used the center dot on the dial as a guide. I would have used the punch but my punch could not reach the center of the pogs.

Once the holes were made I used a paper fastener to put them all together.

The finished product makes an nice an easy counter that I won't mistake for random dice.  I also plan on labeling them so I won't mix them up.

All in all I like these counters.  They were cheap and if you just use scissors all you have to pay for are the paper fasteners.  For now these will work.  I can always go fancier later if I want and I won't have to worry about the money I put into these.

I hope you like them.

Moving and a Going Away Present

This past month has been crazy.  The main reason for the craziness is that I am moving.  I will be leaving the DC area and moving to the mid-west. While I won't miss the traffic or the crowds, I will miss an awesome gaming group.

When we first moved here I only found a couple of places to play 40k and the one I tried to play at my opponent tried to cheat at every turn.  Then I found the THE TABOR WARHAMMER LEAGUE: Serious Players for 40K/WHFB. Right off the bat they made me feel like a longtime friend.   The owner, Christopher, is a great guy who is laid back while still playing competitively.  The general rules are have fun, not to be TFG (that F’ing guy), and play to win.  For the most, they are followed in that order.

Being the great guys that they are they gave me a going away present.

Which will eventually turn into

Ever since I brought my grot tanks Christopher has wanted me to get the Grot Mega Tank.  I guess he figured this would be the one sure way it will make it into my army.  I am just sorry it will be some time before he gets to see it on the field.

I will be coming back for Shorehammer this year so I guess I will be bringing Orks.  We will have to have a grudge match since the highlander doesn’t allow Forgeworld.  I am looking forward to building it.  It looks so fun.

So, my content might be light for the next month.  If you can stick it out with me, I will be back with new hobby articles, new ramblings, and new battle summaries.  Heck, maybe I will add in a video or two.

A 40k Welcome to the Mid-West

$

This Week, I had my first 40k game in the "new" town.  I played at my the old haunt of Fantasy Books and Games.  It was their typical 40k league night and they are running the "Fate of Konor" campaign.  I decided to bring my space bugs and man were they hungry.

My list was a bit different than usual.  It consisted of a flying tyrant, 2 exocrines, 2 malanthropes, 20 genestealers, 22 gaunts with 10 devourers, another 21 gaunts with 10 more devourers, 8 raveners, a broodlord and 3 barebones carnifexes. I chose not to bring the mama bug and give the tyrant a chance.

My opponent had a tank heavy list. He had a battle cannon Russ, a demolisher cannon Russ and a vanquisher cannon Russ.  He also had a wyvern and a hydra to round out the tanks.  He was led by a company command squad and two commanders with several other elite characters rounding out his command group.  His troops were three guard squads with a flamer which were supported by a squad of ogryns, a Valkyrie, and a vindicare assassin.

When he stole the initiative I was worried.  He could have done a lot of damage but with the guards normal 4+ to hit anything in my malanthrope bubble turned that into a 5+. This was a game changer.  He spent a lot of time shooting at my exocrine with lascannons and vanquisher cannons with little effect.

The canrifexes did ok.  They took some of the heat off my genestealers but really didn't make their points back.  I think the way to play them is with old one eye with crushing claws.  Otherwise the strength 6 just might not cut it.

The Exocrine did well taking out many guardsmen, a Valkyrie, and a demolisher Russ.  Looking around the shop I think their tables need more full line of site blocking.  Since cover now is just for if you are in cover, having ruins is not as big as a deal.  My exocrines could hold the table with just one piece of terrain partially block some of the view.

Overall I have a good time.  My opponent's dice were ice cold and we were able to add more biomass to the digestion pools.

Have a good weekend and I hope to have more frequent blog posts.

WIP Grot Mega Tank

During this move I brought my nids, my orks, and my new sister army while the rest of the troops were shipped along with the rest of the house.  I also brought along my grot mega tank to work on and over this weekend I did just that.

This tank is just funny.  It is like a World War 2 destroyer on tank treads.  It boasts 5 guns and optional boom kanisters.  Three of the guns are like the grot tank counterparts where the other two are the supped up twin versions.  I am looking forward my first game fielding this awesome kit alongside its little brothers.

The kit went together ok.  I am shaky about the tracks, they don't feel solidly attached and the plow was a pain.  I resorted to using a 2 part epoxy to make sure it stayed attached.  I am hoping that it stays in one piece.

Next up is painting this guy.   I was thinking of going with blue to match a couple of my other grot tanks or green.  I am also toying with trying to get a bunch of the colors of my tanks and making it really look like a hodge podge of parts. I have a few days to stew it over since I need to find a time and place to prime it.

I am looking forward to playiing and giving the mega tank its maiden voyage.  I hope it will do well.  I just love these guys.

WAAAAAAAAAAGH!!! Orks Battle Summary

Last week I got another game of 8th in at my local game store.  While I love my bugs, my orks were itching for a fight (when aren't they?) So I put together a list, including the new grot mega tank(GMT) and got ready to throw down.

This week I faced an imperial fist army.  It was well painted.  It had whatever named character they have (?Lysander?), several terminators, a landraider, a squad of assault centurions, a thunderfire cannon, a librarian, and various tactical marines with razorbacks and rhinos.  I was really worried about the landraider and centuions.  The landraider could sit back and fire its four lascannons at my grot tanks all day and centurions always scare me.  At least they were assault centurions meaning they had to come to me before wrecking face.

My list was led by my big mek on bike with Kustom Force Field (KFF).  Followed by a warboss and a painboy both on bikes, a nob squad on bikes, a squad of mega nobs in a truck, a normal squad of nobs, the GMT, five grot tanks, and finally three squads of thirty boys.

I like the grot tanks this edition. After one volley with the grot tanks my opponent knew he had to bring them down.  With four tanks and a commander they have six shots with rokkits.  This was enough to take out most of his terminators. The new AP really helps out my rokkits. These little guys are awesome.

The GMT did its job soaking up fire.  I had the mek with KFF next to him all game which lead to some amazing saves making three out of four saves vs his landraider's lascannons.  Shooting wise he did ok when he got to shoot.  On two of my turns, I rolled a one on its munity check and could not fire for a turn looking back this would have been a nice time for a command point reroll. Oh well.

The biggest error of the game my opponent did was when my opponent brought his landraider right up to my big squad of boys. By my turn two, I was able to tie it up so it couldn't fire.  Later in the game, I did finally destroy it with the mega nobs.  I think he should have kept it back and fired at will but I am not complaining.

I do need to remember to roll the wound ignoring rolls that the aura that the painboy gives to my units. This at least give my boys a fighting chance against anything with an AP value.  Once the boys got stuck in, they had to kill almost the whole unit to move on to juicer targets.  The painboy really helped out keeping them there when I remembered to roll for it.

The plain nobs sat in my deployment zone hoping to last the whole game.  We were playing Konor week two and the defender got point for having units in their deployment zone.  I brought them because I needed something to fill in points for my three mek guns.  I remembered the guns but not the grots to go with them. I felt like an idiot.  I had the nobs and they got me a point so all is well.

In the end, bad rolling and my tar pitting kept my opponent away from my deployment zone.  I won the day 13 - 8. My boys had a good fight and I had a good time.  In the end that is what counts!

Moving has hut my hobby time!

Hello all you readers out there, I know I have been pretty quiet this last week and for that I am sorry.  My only excuse is that I didn’t get a game in and I was moving into the new house.  My posts might still be a bit sporadic as I am settling down in the new place but if you hang in there with me I will have more content coming at ya.

Looking at the news I see my first 8th edition codex is coming soon.  The Ad Mech codex will be a nice pick up.  The only real downside is that it is not tyranids or orks.  I look forward to seeing the forge world special rules.  Will they be good enough to not take Mars with Cawl?  We will have to find out. The one thing I am sad about is that the forge world knights or units will not be in this book.  My Archeron and Peltasts are itching to get into the fight.

I am continuing to work on my grot mega tank.  It is base coated and I intend to try some rust effects using the hairspray method.  If it doesn’t work I will just go back and paint it up like the rest of my orks.  Got them there is no such thing as rust.  If it work I will have some fun repainting my orks, so they look uniform and cool.

I also picked up a toxicrene to add to my tyranids.  I am glad that he has been improved upon in this edition.  I am not sure it is good enough but we shall see once he is built.  At least I will have some fun making his tentacles manageable.  I might even try to magnetize him to be interchangeable with the maleceptor.
Lastly, my local shop had a bazaar.  By the time I got there, most of the good deal were gone. I did find some old school warriors for a buck a piece.  I just couldn't resist.
Well, that is all for now.  I will keep you guys posted on my hobby stuff as it happens.  Hope you all have a good week.

Kitty came out to play!

Last week I brought back the bugs to duke it out at the Thursday night league night.  One of the workers was disappointed when I brought my orks last time so to make him happy, my tyranids got to come back for more biomass.

I thought I would change it up a bit this time.  I brought out the tervigon for some spawning fun.  I added crushing claws to him but saw that this was a mistake since he is not great to begin with in close combat.  Swinging to hit on 5s is just not fun.  On the flip side she did well replenishing the little guys.  One mama and some babies might just become a staple of any of my tyranid lists.

Another almost must have is two exocrines. They just do so much work.  They sit in the center of my deployment zone and just fire away.  Squads of marines just disappear.  With them I also like to take a manalthrope babysitter. This makes them harder to hit. If I can find some cover for them, or add some catalyst to them, they could be tough to move.  At 12 wounds apiece, it will take 2 really lucky lascannon shots to take them out otherwise 3-4 would be more like it.

When making this list, I wanted to have some fun.  Since the shop allows lords of war, I decided Kitty would join the fun.  My scythed hierodule never got to see much action in 7th edition.  While he has 22 wounds, focusing fire on him will make him disappear pretty quickly.  With his total being over 400 points I doubt I will take him often but when I want to have fun he can come out to play.

I played against an ultramarine army.  He had a bunch of character, two assault squads, two veteran squads (I think they are the elite jump guys), two tactical squads, one set of the new jump guys, the new plasma guys, and a scout squad to round it out.

I think if we just had a normal mission the outcome would have been different but since we were doing the Konor mission he had to keep advancing or else die.  In the end I took out all of the troops and was starting to pick off his characters.

I need to stop spreading out my genestealers.  They take up more room but when I charge most of the unit is left in the dust.  I am to set in the old blast template days.  I don’t have to worry about a blast taking out a bunch of guys anymore.  If they bunch up then maybe more than a few can reach the lines.

Another thing I need to do is figure out which combat to interrupt.  I got greedy and had my genestealers go out of turn but realized that my gaunts would have done a lot better if they went before the assault marines.  Live and learn.  It is a new mechanic that I will get better with in time.

The Tyranids did pull out a victory.  I was a bit worried with this one but it all went smoothly in the end.  I still am not looking forward to facing a tau list or a knight list.  My streak is still going strong.  I am knocking hard on wood to keep it alive.

This week I am introducing 40k to a friend so maybe I will have a new opponent soon.

WIP: Gaming Room

When we moved, we decided that we would rather own than rent.  When we found our house, I found I had a large room downstairs that we never had before.  We decided this was my chance to have my very own game room.
The first thing I did was find a used cabinet that will house my miniatures.  It will be nice to have those miniatures I worked so hard on displayed instead of cooped up in a box.

After that I found a nice table that is almost 6' x 4' for only $13 (high five)  This table will be my gaming table but also it servse as another table for holiday parties.  When the family comes over there is easily 30 of us or more.

My next purchase was a gaming mat. I think these are a wonderful way of  making a table look nice. As you can see I went with a desert theme.  The Death Ray Designs terrain looks nice on it.  A big shout out to Daniel Ottalini for getting this terrain painted up.  As soon as I get my light box all set up, I will have a blog post about it as well.

Lastly, since my mat hung over the sides I needed a way to do a true 6' X 4' table.  I plan to eventually get a board to lay out but lack of funds and time sent me in a different direction.  What I did have on hand were cardboard boxes.  With some hot glue and many layers I made myself a  73" X 49" board.  While it is not as good as a plywood board, it does do the trick.

The room is not complete but it is ready for action.  I plan to add some stools and maybe a side table or 2. The cabinet has some lighting on it but I may add some more depending on how it looks with my miniatures in it. There is enough room for another table but I am unsure if I would ever need a second one. Maybe I could start a meetup and host some game days at the house like the awesome Tabor Warhammer League . That might be too ambitious though.

WIP: Grot tank and Tox monster

This weekend we had a extended weekend which I took a little break from working on the house and got some hobby time in.  Mainly I worked on my Grot Mega Tank (GMT) and the Toxicrene.

When we last saw the GMT, it was primed and I was debating whether or not I was going to try to weather it or just straight up paint it.  After many days of procrastinating, I decided to try out Greggles Chipping method. While I don't have the chipping fluid he uses, I have seen people get similar results with water based hairspray.

So following the instructions, I applied a brown basecoat (sorry, my light box is MIA right now)

After that I used a sponge to apply two different oranges.  Once those were dry, I sealed it with a matte finish.  I had to stop here since I didn't have the hairspray yet but I was not ready to call it quits on my hobby time. Time to work on the Toxicrene.

I got most of the way done assembling him.  All that is left is the tentacles and his right arm.  I decided to not magnetize him.  I don't think I will ever use a maleceptor.  If I decide that I need one I am sure I can find a way to add one to my hive.

For his tentacles I want to try to shape them a little bit since they extend well past the base.  I plan to try using a hair dryer to soften them up, then re-pose them to make them more manageable.

I am eager to get this guy on the field.  While I don't think he is game changing he will help out with my target overload style of play.

Hope you are having a good week.

UPdate: What have I been doing?

It has been a crazy few weeks at home.  I have not had a lot of time to focus on my hobby.  I got a game in at the shop where my genesteal cult got smashed by the the eldar, I did some work on my display cabinet, and painted a little bit of the Grot Mega Tank (GMT).  This weekend I picked up the ad mech codex I will probably try to write up a review later this week.

So first I want to talk about my game.  The eldar list was rough on my cult. 3 night spinners, eldrad, a knight, a lord, a squad of wraith guard, a hemlock fighter and a fire prism to round it out. He was destroying units left and right.    I figure I need another primus to help with the cult ambushes and maybe some more genestealers.

The more expensive metamorphs, without the use of the rending claw along with the metamorph claws, are ready disappointing .  If I had them, I would run more acolytes instead.  Sure the acolytes have less attacks but they are cheaper  and have access to a few higher strength weapons if needed.  I think it is a fair trade.

I might try to get more goliath rockgrinders for the cheap big guns.  The Battle cannon russ can't do it on his own.  I could bring in an exocrine but then I loose cult ambush which is not cool. I might as well run Tyranids all around if i am going to bring other Tyranid units. Hopefully the cult will get a boost when their codex drops.  It could have just been a bad matchup. I will need to look at them again.

Next up,  I started to add some lights to my display cabinet.  This is my first time working with LEDs.  I got some clips that make it eaiser to make the connections.  The glue on the back of the lights is not strong enough to keep the lights in place so i will need another way to mount them. Overall, I like how they  look.

Lastly, I started to paint up the patchwork armor for the GMT. Once it is fully painted I can start the weathering.  I am getting excited.

That is all for today.  Look for the review later in the week. Have a good week.
