Showcase: Genestealer Cult Aberrants

$

Happy new year.  After a long absence I have returned with a showcase of my finished aberrants.

With only a few of these to do, I thought I would batch paint them and knock them out.  My paint scheme for these is like the one I do on my acolytes.  Where the tyranid looking parts are I painted them dark blue and where the mutated human part I used the light blue skin.

I am sad that there is only two versions of these models.  With only 2 variations the repetition is noticeable.  Where you have 4-6 different models (acolytes and neophytes) it is not as noticeable.  If I was going to use these guys more or try a bigger squad I might have tried to model them differently. since I don't see them being a big part of my army, I left them as is.

The problem with them is they are really frail and very expensive. for the same cost I can get 3 squads of acolytes which alone can cover more ground. Second in most situations the acolytes will do better in combat.  Really, the thing they are good for is opening tanks. Without upgrading to the heavy weapons the acolytes have a hard time hurting anything over av 10.

So, the aberrants have a role.  I think  I can fill that role in another way whether it is neophytes with laser, goliaths, sentinels, acolytes with heavy weapons or leman russes.

Have a great week and I will catch you next time.

Showcase: Flash Gitz

With a week left before our big Apocalypse game, I decided to work on some of my orks.  One of my goal from last year was to finish up my flash gitz.  Since they were partially painted, I was determined to finish them before the weekend. Here are the fruits of my labor.

The guy on the left is an old school metal model.  He has been standing in for a nob before I started using flash gitz.  Now that he has some brothers, I am happy to use him as originally intended. He is a bit smaller and his gun is a little weedy but I still think he is cool.

I had to decide what color to paint my squigs.  I didn't want to use the usual red and my gits have blue on them so I really didn't want to overuse it. So I decided on yellow.  I think it works quite well.

The one on the left in the next set of pictures is my kit bashed gitz.  He is just as big as the GW kit but doesn't have the same looking gun.  I actually like that fact. I don't like having a army of clones.   With the limited molds per entry, any variation is a good thing.

I tried to do a little more than edge highlighting on these guys especially on the skin itself. I have been watching others paint and while I still don't think I am that great, it is a big improvement over my work a couple of years ago.

I still think I need steadier hands and better vision but this is what I can do and have patience for. I hope you like these guys.  I am finishing the Stompa as well as painting up a trukk.  I still will not have a completely painted army but it will be close.

Have a good week.

Showcase: George the Stompa

With work and school, I have had little time to do anything hobby related except for play in a great Apoc game and finish up my Stompa, George.

I bought George many years ago from someone leaving the hobby for $25.  It was a dream come true.  Over the next few years I assembled him, put him on a base, then painted him.  All that was left were some touch-ups and finishing his base.

I went with my usual celluclay with ballast on top.  This is better than just a flat surface but it is not the coolest base ever.  I should have added a few rocks or spare bits but I was in a hurry, so I went the easy route.  I am not sure the lazy hobbyist would have let me spend more time on the base or the scared hobbyist in me would let me try something braver in fear of messing it up, so I did what I was comfortable with. Overall, it is just basing and is not supposed to be elaborate.  Simple is good.  This way you pay more attention to George.

It is a wonderful model.  It went together easily and it towers over all my other models except for the knight. I finally got to use him in the Apoc game and for a super heavy he is not that over powered.  On turn one, he ran out of bullets and shot all his rockets.  So the rest of the time he was shooting the S10 AP1 massive blast.  While this is impressive,  when others are shooting D blasts all over the place it felt a bit underpowered.

He survived the whole game.  They took a couple of hull points off him but my meks just healed him up. Next time I think I will try to get him into the battle and start chopping stuff up.  It would definitely be more fun!

I hope you like the pictures. Next up are my new trucks then back to the genestealer cult.  I will also be adding Belisarius Cawl to my Ad Mech army so look for him early February.

Showcase: Genestealer Metamorph

Over the weekend, I had some time to add the finishing touches on some metamorphs that I have been working on. I am taking a break from the orks now that the apocalypse game is past and I am refocusing on getting my genestealers painted.

Looking at the photos, I see where I can improve my painting even with my heavy hand. Just looking at the gun I see the barrel of the gun needs to be marked out.  It also looks like I forgot to wash it as I usually do.

This is a big problem when I am a hobby butterfly.  When I go from model to model sometimes I miss a step. I will have to remedy this before I start on the next few.

Seeing that this is a flamer I might want to color the canister a different color to help with the ease of play. If it stands out, it will be easy for my opponent and I to tell the difference.

Out of all the metamorphs heads, this one is my favorite. I am tempted to grab a bunch of these heads so the majority of my metamorphs have it.  There is just something cool about the hive / tyrant guard head.  If I plan to have 30 metamorphs in the end I am thinking having 15 of them with the guard head.

Normally, I have the lash whip a light greenish color on my tyranids.  I decided since the cult is still not completely turned, I would use the lighter blue, like the neophyte skin.  This way, it stands out on the model but will blend in with the army.

While the guard head is my favorite head the crushing claw is my favorite mutation. It is also nice that it adds and +2 strength.

I am not sure how many of each mutation I want but I have a feeling I want a few more of these than the regular talon.  I think I have some extra lash whips I can use but I don't have extra claws.  I have a ton of of the monstrous creature ones but I think that would look silly.  The Tyrant guard ones might work but I will have to find some since all the ones I had are taken.

With these finished, I have completed most of the metamorphs I own.  It will be enough for one subterranean uprising but not enough for two.  I will have to get at least one more box before I am ready for that.  I might get another Overkill box and try to get some arms.  This might be a cheaper option.  I just don't like getting into the habit of buying huge sets and counting on parsing out the unwanted parts to make up for the price.

We shall see.

Showcase: Genestealer Acolytes

Throughout last week I worked on getting a hand full of acolytes finished got my genestealer cult. lets looks at the fruits of my labor...

First up, I noticed that this is an illegal model.  The acolyte leader is the only one who can cake a lashwip and he can't take the banner. Also an acolyte can not have a lashwhip without a bone sword.
I am not sure what I am going to do about this.

I might try to replace the arm or hand.  I will try to salvage the whip since it is a rare find. I could repaint him to be a metamorph. Now that I am thinking about it, I think that was the plan when I was building him.  This will also account for the Ymgarl head.

Other than that error, I finished the rest without a problem.  They went relatively quickly. They are quite detailed.  This makes the assembly line painting not so bad.  It is not like termagants where you primarily use 3 colors (skin, shell, teeth), you get several different  steps (skin, armor, cloth, pants, dark skin, metal, eyes/gems leather). All these steps help break up the monotony of assembly line painting.

I hope you guys like the models.  I am loving these guys.  I will be using them this weekend so I won't have such a grey tide.  Next, I am working on my birthday Metamorphs.  I might have all of them painted before gameday.

Showcase: Metamorph repaint

In my last post, I talked about how one of my acolytes was built in an illegal configuration. I also said that I could make it a metamorph.  I decided to repaint the model instead of trying to replace the arms. It was the best and easiest option. Here is the completed model.

There is not much difference in the two styles.  All I really had to do was darken the skin then highlight it.

This scheme also brings out the tentacles on the head since they no longer blend into the rest of the head.

Overall I love the new look and am glad that I made this switch.  My acolytes nolonger have a banner but I am okay with that.

That's all for today.  I should have the rest of my new metamorphs and iconward done by Saturday.  I should have a post either tomorrow or Monday.

Showcase: Iconward and Metamorphs

Last week I worked on my metamorphs and an Iconward to lead them.  With a batch of 5 to work on I knew I could get them done before the game day on Sat.  I already felt bad that my neophytes and acolytes were either grey or primered so getting all of my metamorphs painted is a win.

First up we have the Iconward.  He is just a metamorph carrying a big banner.  I tried to go with a green icon but it just looked like a stray brush stroke than a symbol.  So I went with a darker blue.

I am not sure why they made this character instead of just adding the big banner to the metamorph box.  I was hoping he would be a bit bigger or had more armor.  oh well.

Next up is the metamorphs.  These guys are the workhorse of my build. I team them up with my primus and if they can get into combat they rarely disappoint.  With four attacks on the charge with rending it is hard to ask for more.

I like having the claw option on a couple metamorphs.  Wounding on twos helps pouring on the pain.  If you make terminators make enough saves they are bound to miss a few.  It also helps taking out vehicles.  Nothing scares me more than a landraider. The cult needs some haywire attacks.

I did this smaller icon like I did my first one.   I am not sure if I want to try some freehand to make it a little more unique.  It is something to look at later after the army is complete and I want to improve the look.

For now I have a enough metamorphs for a large squad or two small squads. If I want to add more I would like to get another one to three lash models.  Getting those attacks in before the opposition helps thin out the herd for the rest of the squad to attack.

I added the bone sword for the rule of cool.  I doubt I will ever switch out the rending for a bonesword on a metamorph sergeant but he does look cool.

Now that I am caught up on the metamorphs, I might take a break and work on my Belisarius Cawl model.  So far he seems a lot smaller than advertised.  We shall see once he is all assembled.

Have a great week!

Showcase: Belisarius Cawl

After I worked on my metamorphs, I decided to change it up a little bit and work on the lastest addition to my Ad Mech army, Belisarius Cawl.

After building Cawl, I was a bit disappointed in his size. I was lead to believe that he was massive.  While he is pretty big, I would not say Carnifex big. I think it was a good idea that they didn't make him a monstrous creature.

The assembly went okay.  There are a lot of hoses that gather in his back that you kind of have to place and hope you get it right.  Also I found a lot of the fiddly bits didn't want to sit right on him.  A peg and hole system would have been welcome.

I painted him in my Ad Mech colors. I added a touch of yellow on some of the hoses.  This will tie him in with my knight who also has the yellow hoses.

On paper this guy seems mean.  Most of the time, he will be hard to kill.  I will probably add him to a group of robots or destroyers to help them stay on the board longer while passing out his canticles.

He looks to be a close combat monster with 2D6 attacks from the hive and another one from the dataspike all at initiative 10.  Then he gets his regular S10 AP2 hits at Initiative 1.  This has the potential to be devastating.

I am looking forward to testing him out on the field.  I will have to rearange some of my units but I think I can fit him in.  I don't play the war convocation so I don't have to take any formation tax (I am looking at you rust stalkers and infiltrators)

Have a good week.

WIP: Goliath Truck

The project this week is my Goliath tank that I got for my birthday. I knew I wanted to magnetize it so I could run any of the options that are available.  Here is a quick look on how it turned out.

For the gun, I glued a washer on  the mount point and then added some magnets to the bottom of each mount.  This way I can use either gun mount when I needed.

After that I added a magnet inside the large mount at the gun point. Then added some magnets on each of of the tips. This way changing the gun type is quick and easy.

Here are the results once it is assembled. (third option is pictured up top)

Lastly, I needed to be able to swap out the rockgrinder shield mounted on the front. I place two magnets on the inside of the truck and one on each strut off the shield.

I missed taking a picture of the placement inside of the magnets but here is the shot of the grinders and its magnets.

It is a nice kit.  My final shot is the truck completely disassembled, ready for what ever configuration I need to make it.

The nice thing about building the kit this way is that I didn't use the base of the gun mount. So, the next truck I can make both versions of the gun with each having a real base.  Not bad at all.  Work is killing me this week so I doubt I will get to paint it up.  Maybe that will be next week.

Have a good one.

I finished painting my Goliath Truck for the genestealer cult. The painting went realitively quickly.  Lets take a look.
Since this is my first true genestealer cult vehicle, I had to decide if I wanted to either match the paint scheme of  my guard units or go with something completely new.  Seeing that I will be using my guard tanks along side the goliaths I decided that they should match.

I am a bit worried about going forward with the green since it is the old Knarloc Green.  When this paint pot finally runs out or dries up I am going to have a hard time matching it.  I have looked at the new line of GW paints and none of them are quite the same. Speaking of paints, the color I used for the green highlight seems a bit bright. I like the way it looks so I am not worried.

I finished everything I need for the truck load out.  I still have all the rockgrinder pieces to paint up before this kit is finally finished.  There is not a lot of work mainly the grinder attachment. The guns will go quickly.

Next on the plate will be a couple of heavy weapon teams, a metamorph and an acolyte.  After that I think I will do a batch of neophytes then acolytes. I sent an email to Miniwargaming asking if they allow the start collecting formations in their games.  If they do I have a Triarch Stalker to paint up and a few wraiths I need to fix.

I will be getting in a few games this month with my gaming group but I am hoping to find a few more outside of gameday to test out my lists.  So far I have a tyranid list, a necron list, a cult mechanicus list, and a genestealer cult list.  I am doubting that the genestealers will be ready in time.  I have probably 40 models to paint to have a fully painted army.  We shall see.

I hope you guys have a great week.  we'll see how far I can get.

Showcase: Genestealer cult

Last week I had a few random genestealer cult members sitting on my desk.  Since they were primed the same time as the Goliath, I thought that I would get them painted up before I moved on to other tasks.

First up was an acolyte with a heavy rock grinder.  I had put a bits order in for some legs since I had the heavy weapon torso from when I bought the box of metamorphs.  I already built a heavy rock drill from my first box so, I thought I would add a saw this time.

I tried to add some white highlights on his light skin but I am not sure it is really visiable.  I need to fire my photographer and get one who can do a better job.

I probably won't use this model unless I summon a group of acolytes. I am not sure if one rock saw is worth three more acolytes. The only real time I will need them is when I am going up against land raiders. Maybe I will hide one in a group of 10 kind of like a nob in a group of boys. It is worth thinking about but for now, I am going to go with more bodies.

Next up was a metamorph.  To build this guy I had to get some legs and the front of a torso from my bits order.  I really like having my metamorphs kitted out with lash whips.  The boost to initiative helps ensure that they go before most of the other fighters in the combat. There is nothing worse than getting into combat only to be slaughtered before attacking. (I am looking at you Abberants)

I like that with a few extra bits I can stretch the metamorph box to 7 models.  This makes it cheaper to flesh out the ranks.  I think I am going to try one more Overkill set and sell off everything but the acolytes.  Hopefully I will break even or get a little extra money for my efforts.

The one draw back is that this is the only pose with a lash whip. If I group them together that start to look  very mono-posed.

The last two models are lascannon heavy weapon teams.  I had two unpainted teams for my guard that I cannibalized to be genestealer neophyte teams. Most of the time, I am going to run my neophytes with two mining lasers but sometimes I will want longer range.

The two free standing neophytes are from the truck kit.  I was just going to put them on their own base but I think adding them to the teams ties the kit to my army.

The Neophyte torso is a bit bigger than the standard guard so I had to do some modifications to their hands.  It is not pretty but it looks okay from a distance.

The next few weeks I am going to focus on the amries I am taking to Miniwargaming.  I have a triarch stalker to paint as well as as many gaunts as I can.  I think I have all the rest of my necrons painted.  I will need to make sure they are all based as well.  I plan to gather up the armies so I know what I still have to deal with before I go.  My trip is almost a month away now... so excite.

Have a good week.

acolytes and magus

Recently I painted up a magus and a few acolytes.  Unfortunately, I have not had the time to show you guys so here they are.

First up is the magus. I wanted to be a little different with him and added a bit of metallic medium to the paint for the robe.  It gives it a satin feel.

I also used a metallic blue for his armor.  I think this makes him stand out without looking too out of place.

Next, I have my second heavy weapon acolyte with a plain acolyte.  The rock grinder looks cool but I think the rock saw will be the way I equip them going forward.

If I am going to take these guys to Miniwargaming, I need to finish up the rest of my acolytes and neophytes.  This is a tall order for less than a month but, I am up for the challenge.

The down side of using the Overkill box is you get guys that look exactly the same.  These are my acolyte leaders so they should not be side by side much.

My next box I think I will try to change them up more.   I plan on splitting the box into metamorphs and acolytes.  Maybe then the clone look won't be so noticeable

Lastly, we have a lone acolyte. I was a bit suprised how quick I went through the five man squad.

I tried to make some texture paint with some sand, paint and glue mixture.  I am not sure this is the best.  I am going to go back to the celluclay for the rest.  It is a pain to use but  easier to control than the texture paint I made.

That is all for now.  On my table I have a bunch of neophytes and a single acolyte.  I am hoping it is dry enough to base up the rest of my models so I can just plug away.  Wish me luck.

Showcase: Neophytes Hybrids

Over the weekend I made a push to finish my Genestealer Cult before my big trip.  I was able to complete a batch of 11 neophyte hybrids.

First up is a set of 2 mining laser neophytes.  I did a head swap on one of these to switch it up a bit.  I tend to use these guys over the heavy weapons team.  Most of the time the extra shot is worth the shorter range.  It might hurt them turn one but usually by the second turn they have some decent targets.

The next few images show 7 base neophytes.  I know when batch painting other models (looking at your Termagaunts) it is very monotonous.  There is enough variation or models and colors that I don’t feel the wash out I do with previous painting.  It also might be that I have a goal and need to get this done quickly.  I guess we will see how much I do after the deadline is up.

Last up we have 2 neophytes with grenade launchers.  I accidently added these into my queue thinking they are normal neophytes.  I figured they would have to be done sooner or later so I finished them now.

With that we have a big bulk of my army painted.  I created a 1500 point list including most of my models and I figure I have 19 left to finish.  That comes to less than 10 a week.  After they are done I need to make sure my other armies are fully painted as well.  Crosses fingers!
Have a great week and I will keep you updated on my progress!

Action shots from gameday

A while back I went to a special Game Day where we hosted (more like Christopher hosted) a group from another gaming club.  It was a great day where I played three games and faced off armies and general I have not seen before.  Here are some shots from my second game.

The terrain on the table was done by one of our regular members.  He actually likes building and painting terrain (crazy right?) He asked me to take some pictures of his terrain in action.

This game was a bit one sided.  He had a bunch of Leman Russes but I had cover and my malanthropes.  A 3+ cover save is pretty awesome.  His big shots couldn’t put enough wounds on my big creatures plodding across the board and he just ignored my tyrant.

Looking back, if I were him I would move the demolishers and tried to take out the malenthropes.  The shrouded bubble made it easy for my army to move across the board and nom him in the face.

The terrain was great.  While there was not a lot of line of site (LOS) blocking terrain there was quite a bit of cover.  If my opponent had LOS ignoring shots the game would have been a lot different.  The only thing I might have added were some more walls or maybe a rock outcropping or sand dune.

I like how the terrain is thematic. I think it will go well with his Thousands Sons army. Sometimes when you go to a FLGS you can have a hodge podge of terrain.  When it is thematic and the models are painted it is almost like a story unfolding.

I hope you enjoyed the images.  I know I had fun while taking them. Sorry I didn’t take any from my other games.  I am a bad chronicler.

Have a good weekend!

Showcase: Neophytes

Last week I continued to press forward trying to get my genestealer cult painted.  I had a bunch of acolytes and a few neophytes that need to be painted.  This post I will show off the neophytes that I have completed.

In total there were seven models that needed to be painted: Two mining lasers and five regular guys.

These mining lasers are the stock build from the overkill box set.  I probably should have tried to head swap them but I didn’t think of it before I built them so I kept them stock.  With these complete I have four mining laser, two grenade launchers and two heavy weapon teams.  This will cover me for the specialty weapons for the neophytes.  If I wanted I could get some seismic cannons but I don’t seeing me ever taking them over the lasers.

The rest of the models are just standard neophytes.  I am happy with how they turned out.  With these guys and the mining lasers I have two squads of 10.  I am going to load these up in their Neophyte Cavalcade chimeras for some medium support.

The way I have used them is the past is on turn one they move up and sit on a objective.  Then they sit on it the rest of the game shooting at any target that comes close.

That is all for this post.  Next up are some acolytes.  I have a basing project for my Subterranean Uprising units that might help me keep track of separate units.  I think I have a few necrons to repair or finish painting and a few termagaunts to base.  It should be easy enough.

What Should I Do????

So I have a Dilemma.  When I thought about my trip, I knew I had three days of gaming.  I know usually they shoot one game a day.  With this in mind I thought one army per day would be good enough. Everything was fine and dandy until I did the impossible. I finished painting my genestealer cult.

I thought the armies I would take on my trip would be: Tyranids, Ad Mech, and Necrons.  I figured I had 40 genestealer cultists to paint in two months.  With work and school taking a bunch of my free time I never thought it was possible.  Well it was possible and now I don’t know what to take. Here is how I see it.

Tyranids

This one is a shoe in for going.  It is by far my favorite army.  I don’t use a bunch of flying tyrants so it is a bit underpowered in most player’s position.  They tend to do well in my current meta but we know that means nothing.  If anything, I have to decide which exocrines to take.  Out of the three I own, I plan on fielding at least two.  Do I take the old school one or do I take the kitbashed one?

Necrons

I don’t get to play these guys very often.  I generally don’t do the Decurion because of the cheesey reputation.  I run a combined arms detachment with the start collecting formation and a Canoptek Harvest formation.

I love the look of these guys and I think they are a strong army.  I should not get rolled over and should make a decent opponent.  On the other side, I am told they are a boring army to watch.  They just don’t die.  This could be annoying and make a bad video.

Ad Mech

I love the look of my add mech.  I am still trying to figure out how to play them.  I don’t have all the models for the war convocation but I could bring 1850 to 2k army with my Forgeworld knight for a larger game.

This army has the potential to dominate the field but usually they collapse pretty quickly.  I would love to bring them and try out Cawl.  I have yet to play him.  My fear playing this army is that I will fail hard and the game will not be very fun to watch.

Orks

I love my orks.  They are fun but not very competitive. The main problem is I don’t have all of my models painted.  I would have to play with a subpar list with what I have painted. While not the end of the world I would have the chance to Waaagh for the internets.

Genestealer cult

They are ultimate glass hammer. If the moons align I will get to go first with a lot of assaults.  If not, then it will be an uphill battle.  Having rushed to have them all painted in time, I can’t leave them behind.  I don’t know if my opponent will ask what I am playing before choosing their army but I am afraid of the flamer heavy army.  I know one thing, with the cult there is a possibility of a quick game for either side.

So, there are all of my choices. I am 90% certain that I will be bringing my tyranids and genestealer cult.  This leaves at least one slot open at most two.  So the question is: Do I bring my mob of orks, my “boring” necrons, or my untested ad mech?
If you read this blog, please leave a comment. This is the one time I definitely need some input. I have one gameday before I leave and I want to bring my armies to get a practice game with each before heading out.
Help me out!

Along with the neophytes I had several acolytes that I had to work on.  Here are a set of five.

Pretty standard as the acolytes go.  These are from the overkill box.  Except for the heavy weapons all of my acolytes are from this box.  It is just too good of a deal not to use to fill out the troops.

The am planning to ring the bases of each squad with a different color to make it easier to keep track who belongs to who.  The problem with this is if I want to mix up my army abit I will have to repaint the rings or mix and match the rings.  also summoning can be a problem if I start summoning from my dead pile.  I am going to try it and see how it goes.

That is all for today.  Thanks to all of you who responded to my last post and on Facebook. I am leaning on bringing my ad mech and my orks and seeing which I feel playing that day.  Catch you next time.

Today I have a small update with the last of my  acolytes.

These last eight acolytes are the last models in my 1500 point army.  I still have a few neophytes and a second magus to paint up but they can wait until after my trip.

I plan on expanding the army some more with some more metamorphs and acolytes as well as another Goliath.  It will be nice to get the army up to 2k but for now I am content to move onto a different army for a while.

Next up I am working on some ork vehicles as well as making sure my other armies are ready to go.  There are a few gaunts that need basing, the genestealers need their bases expanded and based and my orks might need some loving. It is getting down to the wire…

Showcase: Ork Rides

My final preparations for my trip to Miniwargaming next week I need to finish painting up a couple of Ork Rides. Check out the images after the hop.

First up is a Battlewagon.  I have had this model built and primer red for years.  I decided that painting from red might be ok for a total red miniature but for something like this it is worse to try to get into the cracks to cover the red then to just rebase it.  I also decided not to paint it red.

I wanted to give this battlewagon to my flash gitz so I painted it up in their colors. I painted the main body blue with hints of bronze sheets and the rest I painted leadbelcher and black. This fits in with my flash gitz scheme.

I still haven’t figured out how I am going to work the deffrolla and ram on the kit.  So I left that off for now. I am sad on how much they nerfed it.

After the wagon I had a truck to complete.  This is one of the two from Miniature Scenery I love the look of it.  This is also my first large yellow model.  I am still not sold on how it turned out.  After many thin coats I think I covered the base color.

I loved this kit.  It went well together and rather easy.  The only problem I had was with the shocks.  There were two different sizes and the instructions were not clear which went where.  In the end, I went with what looked right.

The only drawback to this kit was the shipping.  It was coming from Australia and it is MDF so the shipping was quite expensive.  The more you order though the better the shipping so maybe stores or groups of people can get an order for a decent price.   The kit itself is about the same price as a Trukk so no real savings but a different look.

With these two vehicles painted, I have all the models I am taking painted, based, and ready for combat.  Only a couple of days left before I head up to the great white north.  So excite.

My trip to MiniWarGaming

Last week I packed up 4 armies and headed up to Niagara Falls to meet with the boys over at MiniWarGaming.  Ever since I became a vault member of MiniWarGaming, I have wanted to head up there and challenge them to a battle.  I was excited and looking forward to a few days of 40k Fun.  They did not disappoint.

My first game was against Steve.  He had promised a dad he met at Adepticon that he would play a game of Ultra Marines in honor of his child.  It was cool to be part of this tribute.  I was worried that I would be facing Guliman and a bunch of Grav guns but the list Steve brought was very friendly.  I had a blast playing my Tyranids against the Mountain.

My second game was against Dave.  I gave him the option to play against my Orks, Genestealers Cult(GSC), or Ad Mech.  He quickly picked my Orks.  Dave wanted to do a fluffy list based on the Captain Karlaen’s Angelic Strike force.  We sat down and looked at the picture in the book and tried to match what he fielded to what was in that Chapter.  He had three squads of terminators and a squad of Sanguinary Guard That is a lot of 2+ armor to chew through.

Dave also loves the Narrative and so we went through the book trying to match up a game with one of the battles chronicled in the book. After some time we found a scenario that was close and then added a bit of fluff of our own.  With this Warboss MoonSmasha was born… or was it MoonCrusha…  LOL

This game was a lot of fun.  The story added an extra bit of fun.  Dave was a great opponent and a blast to play against.

On my last day, I played Josh.  By now I only had the Ad Mech and the GSC.  He chose the GSC because my 1850 point list of Ad Mech had my Knight Acheron in it. I did have a 1500 point list without it but he still chose the stealers. This made me happy since I had worked so hard to get them ready before my trip.

The night before the game, Josh asked me how many flamers would I consider too many?  He kept pointing out that he could take groups of chosen all equipped with flamers.  He also suggested multiple helldrakes could make an appearance. I was worried that the game might be over before it begins.

When I got there the next day, I was relieved when I arrived when he only had 2 squads of tactical marines with 2 flamers each.  He had a couple of swiss army knife terminator squads, a daemon prince, some havoks, and a group of raptors.  We talked about the relic that gave his prince a 2+ re-rollable armor save. I really didn’t want to face that so he brought an orb that gave him rerolling ones on armor saves, to hit, and to wound rolls.  All I knew was to keep away from that prince.

While I am starting to sound like a broken record, this game was fun.  The guys there really know how to keep the game fun while filming. Josh gets a bad rap from the internet (and from Steve) for being a net lister.  He is nothing of the sort.  Sure he can play some mean lists but he talks to his opponents to make sure they are comfortable with what they bring.

He gave me a choice on who I wanted to play.  He warned me that his Ad Mech was doing really well so we decided on the Night Lords. I think it is just the negativity of the internet.  Most people who think the list is fair or nice are not going to say anything but those who are upset generally are the ones who post.  It is like those restaurant surveys.  Rarely do people who have good experiences fill those out but if they forgot your cheese watch out!

Come to think of it all of the guys there made sure I thought it would be a good game before we started rolling dice.  Dave took out a second squad of guard since I was afraid of all the 2+ armor.  Steve didn’t bring the grave centurions or grave devastators like most marine lists do.  While I don’t think they did, I worry they dumbed down their list to give me a chance.  I just hope they had as much fun as I did.

Overall, my time there was awesome.  The guys were cool and the studios, armies, and  terrain were beautiful.  Adam from Green Leaf does an awesome job making their terrain and Lee does wonders on the minis. If I ever have the chance to go back, I will. It was Awesome!
