Forgeworld Open Day

Yes, I am alive! I have been a bit busy with work school and vacation that I have not had much to post about but this weekend was Forgeworld Open Day and the guys/girls over at BattleBunnies have some pictures from it.  There is a lot of Marines to look at but we all know that I am interested in the Ad Mech stuff.

First up we have a  Macrocarid Explorator.

This guy looks like a cross between a Scicarian and a Triaros. From what I can tell it is a AV 14 transport that can take sponsoons and a few other hull mounted guns.  It would be nice to have some transport for my admech but alas this is for 30k.

Next up is the Vultarax Startos Automata

Again this is for 30k and it looks to be the precursor to the blight drone.  I like this version better and I would love to have this for a flyer in my ad mech army.  Looks like a couple of havoc launchers and a nose gun of some sort.

Last up are the Secutarii.

From what I have read they are from the Adeptus Titanicus.  There are still titans in 40K so they might get 40k rules. If so, I will be able to add them to my Ad Mech army.  I would hate to get them then find out they are 30k only as well and have them just sit on the shelf.

I love the look of the Hoplites.  I would love tho know what the rules for those lances are.  they are like little Lance Knights. The Peltasts gun doesn't look like any gun I know of so I am eager to know what that is as well.

Hopefully since these are in the case and painted we will be seeing them soon.  I have heard that Forgeworld is going to be at Nova open.  If so it might be cool to get a day pass to try and snag a couple of these sets.

I really love the Cybernetica Cohort from the 30k universe.  I just can't see me starting one.  There is enough 40k kits that I am plan on getting.  I just added the whole Ad Mech line and I have a sisters of battle ariving soon.  I think I would have to sell off one of my other armies if I wanted to start them up.  I just don't want to do that. Also, I just don't know anyone who plays 30k.  I know it is similar to 40k but the armies just don't match up very well.  This is a topic for another time.

Coming up this week I have pictures from this weeks big Apoc game.  My poor Knight!!!
After that a showcase of my finished manticore and some new wip. Until then...

WIP: ghost ark

As our campaign wraps up and another one begins, I think it is time to let the hive rest and bring out a few of my lesser used armies. I have decided to bring out my Necrons first.
Most of of my painted models were painted before the 2011 codex came out.  After that codex came out I painted up some of the newer units primed others and left the rest grey.  One of the primed ones were my ghost arks.

poor guy was wasting away...
After looking at my Necrons,  I found that my ghost ark needed the most work to get to a playable standard. That green is horrible and I am not sure what I was thinking when I did it.  After I finish painting it, I plan on updating the rest of the army by switching out the flat blue they currently have with the new metallic blue I used on my lychguard test models.

Before I can update the ghost ark's paint job, I need to finish building it.

7 warriors ready for priming.
I assembled the barge empty but never bothered to build the passengers. The plan was to paint them s before I glued them into the ark.  It will be easier to paint the detail on both on passengers and the ark without them in the way.  I ended up gluing one guy in just to make sure I could and to see how cramped it would be.

I spent the night building most of the passengers before heading to bead. I have 2 more to assemble then I can prime them and paint them.  I plan on using the scheme from my warriors with the blue body.

a photo from 2010
I used to have a few different styles but I think I will just stick with one style and I think this looks pretty cool. I will then update a squad of warriors with the new color. After that I can move onto my other squads. I think I have come a long way from these guys. Ok maybe not that far...

Next up I had to add the driver.  I had thought of putting a crystal there driving it but the more I though about it the mor I wanted to use the driver.  I built him up and glued him in.

I really didn't care for the little stand that they used so I beefed up the base and used a couple of bolts to hold him up.  These will be black after I prime him up.  I will probably just leave it at that.  It might be a little tall but I am okay with that.  Just so that it doesn't break off.

I plan on building up the base maybe using some foam rocks like the dunecrawler.  Most of my Necron bases are plain with some ballast for ground cover.  I think I will use some cellu-clay to give it texture add some rocks and call it done. Just need to keep it simple.

Hopefully I will have some more time to work on this guy.  I would like to start painting this weekend .  I am going to cover the green with black since I remember it being a pain to paint on.

Coming up next will be a recap from our 16k per side apoc game then some pictures of my finished manticore.

Showcase: Astra Militarum Manticore

Last weekend I played in a 16k per side Apocalypse game.  I play my Ad mech with some guard support. looking through what I had painted I noticed that the manticore I got, built, and primed over a decade or so ago was still just primed.  Well, it is only primed no longer.
It is my typical Guard tank colors.  An olive green with dark grey panels. Added some edge highlight to make the grey pop.

Usually this guys does well during apoc games but not this time.  My scatter dice betrayed me and I had four single blast shots that kill all of 2 models.  Sigh so said.

I am not that happy with the search light.  I might watch some tutorials and then repaint it some day.

While the missiles are plain I am okay with it.  Any more colors and they might start to look like my ork missiles.

The sad this is this back armor plate was completely missed both when painting the highlights and while playing the game.  I just noticed after taking these pictures.  I will fix this up before moving onto the next project.

And there we have it.  Hopefully I can get back on track and finish my two destroyers, a single skitarii model, and the ghost ark.  My hobby ADD is strong this summer.

That happy feeling when you take out a Knight in a round of shooting

Last weekend, we had an 8 player apocalypse battle with 16,000 points per side.  It was the Imperium versus Chaos.  There were Salamanders, Guard, Dark Angels and Mantis Warriors on one side with Khorne Daemonkin, Chaos Marines, Traitor Guard, and just straight up Daemons on the other. beware lots of pictures.
It was a fun battle I really need to take more pictures.  I did do a few Facebook live streams which hopefully can be found here. Thankfully Kabbala and another friend sent me pics to add to my blog.

if I remember these guys were in combat for at least 2 turns.

Deathwing revenging my knight.

Deathwing hop out to lay more smackdown on the filthy chaos

Unfortunately this "Baneblade" was stuck in a corner most of the game.

This spine beast is ready for lunch... to bad the Knorne got there first.

The chaos advance!

Daemons flooded the backfield turning the Imperium around for a turn

This guy didn't get much action. was stuck behind some slow moving troops.

Trying to push back the horde and dying in the effort

Conga line of chaos space marines

Vulcan takes the field for a challenge.

Dune crawlers looking down field for some targets.

Brass Scorpion and helldrake getting ready for action
My knight sizing up the other knight... was going to be a glorius battle until...

5 meltas and 3 multimeltas Surrounded it to make it go boom.

The atrapos is still standing.  Had it down to 1-2 hull points.

the lone guardsman who survived a plane crash tries to be a hero and take out the knight...

only to be  this poor spinebeast only meal of the day.

Well there you have it.  The game ended 3-3. We forgot to go after their warlords but so did they.  My knight died before he got as shot off or got to charge anything.  This is how it goes in Apoc.  It was a good time and I spent the afternoon with some great guys.  Looking forward to the next one.

Have a good weekend.

Showcase: Kataphron Destroyers and Skitarii Vanguard

This week I finished up painting my Kataphron Destroyers and a stray Skitarii Vanguard with arc rifle. With these painted I have a fully painted 1500 point list of combined Adeptus Mechanicus.  I still have several things I can add but at least for now, I can field an army without using proxies or unpainted models.
First up is my Kataphron Destroyers.  I picked these guy up partially assembled and after I completely assembling them, I found a few pieces missing.  First off they all have the flamer upgrade vs the phosphor blaster.  Adding some flame templates is not the worst if  I am ever forced to go WYSIWYG.

The Second part missing was a Grav Cannon.  After facing off against some daemons I might start running a few plasma cannon destroyers anyway. This way I am not always dependent on the enemy's armor saves to make the grav cannons good.

The last piece missing was the mount for the right arm. With a side by side comparison you can see that the mount for the plasma cannon is not the original piece. The good thing about my level of painting it hides the imperfections.  If you want to could also say the painting makes the original look just as bad as the copy.

When we had our Apocalypse game the other day, I had a need for a fourth arc rifle.  I had a box of vanguard that is waiting for their Forgeworld upgrades. So I used one to build this arc rifle vanguard. While he was built and primed, unfortunately he wasn't painted in time.

I am not sure if I like the green.  I might have to redo it before putting him away.  If I look closely I can still see some of the bronze.

All in all, I am happy with these new editions.  They look decent from a tabletop distance.  That is the goal with my painting.

Next up I am starting the build on my ironstrider and continuing to paint the Ghost Ark.  I have 2 weeks before game day and I hope to have it and its squad all painted up for the table.

As always I welcome feedback on anything I do.  Did you like the video? Did you watch the video? Any suggestions on content for my videos?

wip: Hobby Butterfly

OOPS. I didn't mean to publish this with just pictures but mistakes happen.  So this week I have been a hobby butterfly.  I never settled on any one project for too long. Here are some of the things I have been working on.

I assembled the ironstrider to a point.  I wanted to be able to use it as a Dragoon and a ballistarii.  To do this I molded the drivers torso and added a new backpack and now it is ready to be painted.

I am still not that great at copying bits but when it is something hidden pretty well it seams to turn out ok.  I used the torso on the Ballistarii since his arms and guns cover up most of the details.

Last is a shot of the dragoon driver all primed up.  I should have some paint on him by Monday.

Take me over there!
Next up I have Illuminor Szeras.  I think the model looks cool.  I think the pose could have been better but what are you going to do.  I got hime assembled, primed, and got the first layer on him.

while working on him I also based up some lychguard and I started to paint them up as well.

Some of the lychguard are just getting an update using the new colors.  I still need to figure out the best way tp highlight the blue.  I think I will be finally be mixing colors.  If this is the case I need a wet pallet and to get the most out of my paint.

Lastly I was also working on my  ghost ark.  I have painted up the 9 passengers (not the one glued in).  I have to highlight them still.  I am debating painting their eyes to show they are deactivated. This is just probably me being lazy and not wanting to do the fine details.

So there you have it.  I touch each of the projects a few times this week and worked on all three last night.  It is nice to see several things getting done at once but I think that maybe I should see one done before I move the the next one.

Naaaaaa

Have a good weekend.

WIP: Necron Monday

This weekend while I wasn't out catching pokemon, looking at the corpse flower, or watching Star Trek Beyond, I worked on my Necrons.

First up I finished my passengers for the ghost ark.  They might need a little highlighting but they are good after that. Next up I need to get their ride painted up.

I also did some work on Illuminor Szeras.  I want to try to lay a wash down to dull the silver then bring it back with the same stormhost silver.  I still need to figuter out how to highlight the metalic blue.

Lastly, I worked on the lychguard. I think if the wash works on Illuminor then I can do the same for these guys.  I also have to polish up their swords.

I was shocked how well they turned out.  I am really digging the metallic blue.  If I based them now they would be table ready.  I just want to try to add the extra touches to make them shine.

Busy week this week.  I have my summer semester finishing up so I might not have any posts untill the weekend.

Have a great week.

Showcase: Ghost Ark

This project has finally came to a close. With a few edge highlights and a dusting of sand I have finally finished the ghost ark.  I have had this kit since it was released but never got around to painting it.  Now, it is done.

Of course I see some touch up work after the pictures but over all I like how it turned out. It was much easier to paint with the black basecoat and the crew separate.  I am glad I built it that way.

Even with out the crew it was tough to get all of the details.  For my second one I am thinking  I might break it apart and paint it part by part. This way I can get to the details inside each rib.

I still have a few things to add to the base.  I lighter highlight on the rocks as well as some larger rocks interspersed in the sand.  There are a few holes to cover up as well. For now it is table top ready.

Next on my plate are the ten warrior's to update to match their ride and I will be ready for this weekend. I also have the squad of lychguard, Illuminor Szeras, and a test deathmark on my table. Until next time.

Lychguard

Along with my ghost ark I was working on my lychguard squad.  I have a total of 10 models but two needed replacement swords.  I did get the other eight painted.  On to the pics!

I really like the metallic blue. I am glad I decided to switch over to them.  This means that most of the rest of my army needs an update but I think it will be well worth it.

The power swords are done with iridescent nail polish.  I have watched other people do the blending and other cool effects on power weapon but I can't grasp how it works.

While I am saying these guys are done I might go back and work on highlighting them a little more. The problem with the stormhost silver is that is so bright it is hard to highlight.  Maybe some pure white highlights might work.  I will have to try it out.

In the end I have 8 lychguard that are tabletop ready.  I have a couple more to paint to complete the squad which I will probably do this weekend.  I also have the ironstrider to paint up. It should go pretty quickly.

Have a good weekend.

Game Day!

This weekend we had our monthly Meet Up game day.  I only got to play one game due to some scheduling issues on my part.  A big shout out to Kabbala for hosting and remembering to take pictures.  One of these days I will remember :)

This week we started a new campaign.  Nothing as grandiose as Mini Wargaming's narrative but more than just a bunch of random games.  There is a system map and we fight over territories.  It is a good system and pretty fun.
My newly painted ghost ark takes the field for the first time.

Since my Necrons have taken a back seat for the last couple of years I thought I would let them be the star of this campaign. This week I played against a elite Blood Angels army. from what I remember it was:

Priest
Sanguinor
5 Sanguinary guard
5 man tacical squad
5 man tactical squad
drop pod
storm raven
landraider
5 death company
5 terminators with hammer and shield

My wraiths held up most of his force for 3 turns

The first couple of turns did not go well for my opponent and we stopped collecting objectives since I was up 11 - 1 after turn 2.  It then became a game to see if he could table me.   The Necrons were just too resilient and I held on for the win.
These guys did their job admirably They deserve some paint.

I used the Start Collecting formation, Retribution Phalanx.  I like how it turned out.  I might change up the units a bit and bring a larger group of scarabs.  Three just doesn't seam to cut it.  I also didn't use my Warriors aggressively enough.  With them coming back after they are wiped out I think I need them up front as soon as possible.
Terminators getting ready to smash some necron face.

My scatter dice betrayed me all game with huge drifts. He had so many 2+ saves a few direct hits would have made the difference.  It did one shot the landraider so it at least make it points back.
Zap zap!!

While I love the Illuminor's model I think a regular cryptek with a phase shifter would be more economical.  Although the lance shot is a nice bonus.  I miss the old royal court days.   For the next game day I am going to take out a few immortals and add in some new tomb blades and keep the rest the same and see how it goes.
Are 4 shots enough to take out a storm raven? Nope!

Have a great week.

WIP: Sydonian Dragoon / Ironstrider Balistarius

Now that the ironstrider is built and primed, it is ready to be painted.  I made a good amount of progress last night.  Lets take a look.

These photos were not taken in my light box so, pardon the quality.

The kit makes two units.  I made a mold of the chest piece so I could swap out the driver and get the most use out of the kit.  I decided to make the lascannon version of Ironstrider Balistarius.  I just don't see me ever using the autocannon.  I am not even sure if I will ever use the lascannon version but if I want to I will have that option. One thing I am sure of is that I will be trying out the dragoon. I hear they are a decent addition to the army.  I am looking forward to testing him out.

Painting this model went faster than I thought it would.  I thought it would take a few days but by the end of the night I was adding the final touches her and there. I still don't know if I like the taser lance. I had the same feeling when I painting the taser goads on the infiltrators.  Hopefully I can find some inspiration and I can figure out what I want to do with it.

I added the layer of Agrellan Earth and all that is left is to wait for it to crack and then seal it up. Once that is done I can swing back to work on some Necrons.  I have a new box of tomb blades which when built will make a total of five tomb blades to paint.  I also want to finish up painting my lychguard.  Finally since I hate fielding unpainted models I will look at getting my wraiths and Triarch Stalker painted.

I hope you all have a happy and productive Wednesday.

As promised I have the finished images of my dragoon / balistarius.  lets take a look.

Even after building and painting it I am always surprised by the size.  It always seams bigger in pictures.

The next one I do I might have the pilot steering it and have the handles attached to the dragoon.
This will help break up the models so they all don't look the same.  Too bad I cant do this for the Balistarius as well.

I like how this conversion worked out.  The chest piece is covered enough so it is hard to tell it was cast and it is easy to swap out the different pilots.

I am looking forward to get a second one of these so I can run a couple of them. Until then the lone dragoon will help reinforce my army and help the mechanicum find and hold any tech treasures.

next up tomb blades and a flayed one experiment.

Nova Open

After last year's reaction to the Nova Open I wasn't sure I wanted to go this year.  After I signed up for Shorehammer, I thought for sure I wasn't going to go.  But thing happen and I found I was going to be on my own that week. So, I thought "what the heck!" and now I am heading to the Nova Open.

Last year I made the mistake of playing Infinity after trying to learn it for a few months.  I spent most of my time trying hard not to be overwhelmed by the complexities of that game.  I failed miserably.

This year I the plan is to see what other games are out there.  I am hoping Hawk Wargames is there to demo Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander like last year. There were a few other games being demoed as well. Hopefully this won't change and I can try them out as well.

I am also looking to maybe get into some of the 40K games.  The tournament is way to pricey and hard core for me but maybe I could try the Narrative  Night fighters or even one of the Apocalypse games. Both sound fun, I just have to figure out which one I would like to play in.

In the narrative I could try out any of my armies.  Maybe my orks can come out and play or I can bring my new hotness with my ad mech.  With the Apocalypse game I will have to look to my larger armies.  I can bring out my tyranids with my heirodule or my imperial guard with the shadowsword and knight.  Or just maybe my Stompa can come out and play and cause havoc on the field.

In the end, now that I know what to expect, I think I will enjoy myself at the Nova Open.  I just need help figuring out what I want to do.

Nova Open Decision

With 18 Days till the Nova Open I need to make a decision on what I want to participate in.  I thought about not doing anything but demos but I decided that I want to play some 40k/  I am going to join in the Nightfighters.

While I might still play in the recon games I know I want to play in the narrative.  I am going to bring my necrons and hope to have a fighting chance.  I have a 2000 and 1000 point list that is friendly and doesn't use the Decurion Detachment.  Knowing that I am playing in a public stage I might switch that up so I can get the most out of my time.

I have to start somewhere though and if I go with my list as is I have 20 models that need to be painted.  Tonight I will try to look at my list and figure out what I need to do to make it a Decurion Detachment. Once that list is made, I can revise my painting to do list.

Looking at the list I have my Triarch stalker to paint.  It is part of the retribution phalanx which might get dropped so that my whole army can be part of the Decurion Detachment.  It is a neat model but I am not sure if I would take it if I didn't need to do so.

I have a full squad of Deathmarks to paint.  I painted one up as a test model and I think he is complete or close to being complete. I am going with a dark bronze on these guys.  It will help them stand out and kind of works with the sniper roles they play.

Next will be five tomb blades.  These guys should be pretty quick to paint.  I have a couple left to build but I think these will be the fastest of the groups to paint.

Lastly are my wraiths.  These things are going to be a pain.  There are a bunch of details and I think some hard to reach areas.  I also want to weigh them down so they stand better.

So 20 models in 18 days.  I still have work and school as well to think of while doing it.  It is very doable but a challenge.

Have a good week everyone.

Showcase: Necron Deathmarks

$

I had some time to work on my Deathmarks the last few days.  To my surprise, I was adding the finishing touches to each model.  I am happy to have them finished.  Another squad removed from the unpainted ranks.
Deathmarks are the stealthy snipers of the necrons.  I thought I would do these up in a dark metal, like bronze, to help distinguish them from the rest of my army.

I painted their shoulders the metallic blue like I did with the lychguard and immortals to keep them tied to my army.  Of course the energy green of the Necrons is present as well.

I like how these guys turned out.  For some reason it doesn't transfer to photos well.  I will try to get some better single shots later.

That completes the deathmark portion of my to do list. I still have the wraiths, tombblades, and another ghost arc if I want to use the Decurion detachment.  If not I will swap out the ghost arc for the triarch stalker. There is still a lot to do but I think it will be possible with 13 days to left till game time.

Showcase: Tomb Blades

This weekend I spent some time clearing off my to do list for the Nova Open. I did some work on getting my second ghost ark up and running and I started to work on my Tomb Blades.
Painting these was a bit of a challenge.  There is a lot of details deep in the model which, with my unsteady hand, I had to keep on going back to correct the mistakes I made.

Since these guys are just warriors riding a jetbike, I decided to paint them like my other warriors. I painted their body and head metallic blue while leaving their limbs and shoulders silver. I also have decided that all the little hoses will be green.  This means I will have to go back and fix my deathmarks sometime but that can wait till later.

With these three done, I have two tomb blades to finish.  I also have four wraiths and the ghost ark.  I have a feeling that the ark will be the problem child.  I still have ten days to finish but I also school starts back up this week so some more of my free time is gone.  It is going to be close.

Have a good week!

WIP Canoptek Wraiths

With my tomb blades complete, I started to work on my wraiths.  They don't have a lot of delicate or hard to reach parts like the tomb blades.  They do have a lot more of the ingrained scroll work. This scroll work will give me the most grief and slow down my progress.
After the base coat, I started painting all the silver parts with leadbelcher.  I was not to concerned with how sloppy it was since the green is next and I would have to go back and touch up the black areas anyway.

With the silver done I started the hardest part: the scroll work. I first painted the scroll work with moot green making sure to get it into all the cracks.  Then carefully painted the black areas.  I had to be very careful and hold my breath while painting these areas.

As you can see I got one side done.  Only seven more to go.  After that is done I have the rest of the green, some touch up work, some edge highlights, and finishing the bases and I can call these done.

Hopefully I will have these done before the weekend which leaves me the ghost ark to finish before next Thursday. Whew! I just might make it!

Done-ish: Canoptek Wraiths

Over the weekend I got to play a few games and finish up painting my wraiths to a level of completeness that will have to do for now. I would love to go back and highlight the carapace but I am almost out of time and I sitll have my ghost ark to paint and a few other items to touch up.
I knowthat the back carapace is lacking.  I had a hard time painting in the lines and then cleaning up those lines with the black.

The rest of the wraith is ok.  I really just want it to be decent enough for table top.  I am not sure what else I can do with my hand.  I am just not steady enough to hit all the fine detail.

Another problem is how to transport these models.  I think I have a solution but with all their spikey bits I am affeaid they might snap off .

I have three models with the whip coils and three without.  I am going into a tournament where WYSIWYG so I have to keep that in mind when building lists.

Here is a shot of the four I completed.  I think from a distance they will be okay.

This leaves my ghost ark left I already found out that the driver for it was missing his arms.  I have cobbled some thing together.  Hopefully it will look okay.

I should have some shots tomorrow.

Have a good week!

With just 2 days left, I am running out of time to finish up my army. I kept working on the ghost ark but I also updated a couple of other models to fit in with my new look.
First up I worked on my overlord.  He got a new coat of the metallic blue as well as a highlight with the stormhost silver.  I also added some metallic medium to the aqua to tie it all together,  I am still unhappy with the cloak.

I am thinking about changing the light blue to the copper from the deathmarks. this will accomplish two things.    First, it will tie the deathmarks to the army and second, my overload is equipped with a  veil of darkness. I think a dark color on the cloak will help convey this. If I have a spare moment I might try it out.

Next on my plate was a tomb spyder.  When I first got him back in the early 2000's, I painted this guy completely silver.  To match my new spyder I decided he needed to be mostly black.  I think it looks much better. I might need to add some line highlighting since he looks a little bland but only if I have the time.

Of course we have my ghost ark.  I have most of the green done.  I have alos done a lot of the silver.  After that is done I will have the black touch ups and the passengers to finish.  I need to add the basing tonight so I can put the top sealing layer down tomorrow to be ready for tomorrow.

The passengers are all primed and ready to be painted.  It should be pretty quick to do.  I also need to paint up the warriors to match the passengers.  At one time I was painting each squad differently to make it easy to distinguish between them. While it does help somewhat during play it breaks the cohesion of the army.

I am getting excited but also nervous.  still a lot to do before Thursday.

Showcase: Ghost ark

As the Nova Open opens I put the finishing touches on my ghost ark.

If I ever what to get another one of these or if I want to get a Doomday ark, I will paint each rib individually before assembling the ark.  It was a real pain to paint the green bands on each rib while assembled.

I know I need to go back and highlight the model but it is painted well enough to be on the table.  I will highlight my wraiths before highlighting this model.

I lost the arms for the driver. I ended up using the hand from a destroyer and a warscythe to give him the "get me closer" look. I don't think it looks bad but if I had a another arm with a hand I would have used it but alas I didn't.

So there we have it.  With that I finished the army and now I have a fully painted Necron army for the Nova Open.  I even updated the warriors and immortal to have the same metallic blue so no one looks out of place.

Have a good day.  If you are at the Nova Open maybe I will see ya there.
