Forgeworld: Secutarii Titan Guard

While we have seen these guys in a few Forgeworld open day events,  Forgeworld now have these upgrade kits for preorder.  They also have released the rules that can be found here.

So there are two different units: There are the Secutarii Hoplites and the Secutarii Peltasts. Both take an elite slot in the Skitarii army force org chart.  They are equipped with a Kyropatris Field Generators.

The Generator allows a re-roll armor saves of 1 as long as there are five models left in the squad and if there are ten models, shooting attacks are 1 less strength.  This would help the frailness of the Skitarii units. It is nice but not game changing.

The Hoplites are the guys with a lance and shield.  They seem to fit into a anti-armor role. In close combat they are concussive and haywire with an AP 4.  As a short range shot they still have haywire shot but it goes up to AP 5.  Haywire is nice but at 12" it will be difficult to get them where they need to be. They might be better than a squad of  vanguard with the haywire gun. If only the dragoons had this lance.

The shield will give the Hoplites a 5+ invulnerable save.  Getting any invulnerable save is nice. The problem is it is only a 5+ and it will not save you most of the time.  Then again if I could give my nids a 5+ invulnerable save, I would in a heartbeat. *Shakes fist at GW*

The Peltasts are more like a sternguard unit.  Their gun has three different profiles. There is a 24" strength 3 2/4 salvo with shred, a 18" strength 3 blast that can ignore cover and ignores line of sight, and a 30" strength 4 AP 3 shot with rending.  Since they are relentless, when the shot the salvo profile it will always be shooting the 4 shots.  The blast shot can help clear out hordes of guys.  The AP shot is the one that raised my eyebrow though.

I am always looking for more AP 3 or less weapons.  The fact that it has rending as well makes it even sweeter.  I would want these guys even if that was the only profile that the gun had.  I guess fighting nids or orks I would want to use the other profiles but only on rare occasions.

So, eventually I will be getting both of these kits. Since I have one box of Skitarii waiting for these upgrades, I have decided to get the Peltasts upgrade kit for my September hobby purchase.  October is Dreadtober time so I decided I would build and paint up my second ironstrider for my contribution. If you want to join in the fun grab a dread like model and have fun.

Thats all for now.  The Nova Open is going on and I was spanked in my first game.  Those dang psychic powers are my bane.  Curse you Tigeruis!!!!!!

So the Nova Open is finished.  I am working through the photos and I will have a few posts about the experience.  Before that though I have started to think about what I want to work on to finish out the year.

Looking at the list of things I set out for myself I see several ork and tau models on that list.  While most of those things need to be done, I am not playing either of those armies right now so I am not that hard pressed to work on them.

I do have some spores to finish but I am not ready to do the shrikes I want to do.  I need to find the wings I want.  If I delay long enough maybe GW will finally add a kit.  As for the new bug I don't think the rumors are going to come true.

So, if I am writing off most of the things left on my to do list what am I going to work on? I have a squad of Skitarii Peltast for me to add to my Ad Mech list.  I am looking forard to getting these guys and trying them out on the battlefield.

I also want to give the Necron Destroyer Cult a try. I have all the models needed but they are not even remotely finished.  I have a few in the all silver look but that does not really fit in with my current look.  So to use them I have 15 destroyers to paint and 1 destroyer lord.

I also have some Triarch Praetorians to paint up.  I painted one up this weekend.  He turned out pretty well so I want to paint up the rest of his buddies.  Look for a post later this week.

From the looks of it I have a couple of kickstarters getting ready to drop as well.  One will be bringing me terrain and one a fun board game.  Both will have models to paint so I will have to paint those up.

In October it is Dreadtober and I committed to paint up a ironsrtider,  It will be like my other on so I will have some casting to do.  It should be fun.

So,  I have a few projects to keep me busy over the next few months.  I also have my schooling to keep me busy as well.  Pretty soon though I can check that off of the list as well.

Have a good week!

Last post I talked about the Triarch Praetorian I was working on.  I have wanted to try to try a squad of these guys ever since the Lychguards swords became AP 3.  The are a way to bring AP 2 to the table both through shooting and melee.

They are also jetpack infantry so they are fast and can get into combat as fast as the wraiths.  They are as fragile as a Blood Angel Assault unit with a priest and are pretty pricey but might be worth it.

I think the model is cool.  I like the green ribs. This models staff was broken and I had to do some minor repairs which I think turned out okay.

I tried a little highlighting on the blue I am looking for some feed back on how it looks.

Since I want to try out some destroyers, I thought I would do a test model on one.

These models are a bit dated.  The back carapace is a bit bland.  I would love to have some circuits on it like the spyder and wraith.  Maybe I can find a stencil to adds some more detail.

I added some edge highlighting but it is a bit messy on the carapace.  I am not sure if I like it with this highlight or just the straight black.  I might try to tidy it up but I feel like it will be a exercise in futility.

If I call him done I will have 8 more destroyers to paint up along with the lord.  Whew that os a lot of models.

So I have a couple test models done and I am happy with how they turned out.  I should have them done by the next time I play. Slowly my mountain of unpainted models goes down.

Next post will be the Nova Open!

Last year I went to the Nova Open and was very disappointed.  I was expecting something like Adepticon and with my expectations so high I was dissappointed.  I also was trying to play an new game.  I now know that Infinity is not my style and this year I decided to play some 40K because it is what I know.
There were several different games going on from the Grand Tournament to the Trios Tournament to the Narrative. This doesn't even cover the Apoc games and 30K events.  I chose to play in the Narrative.  More on that in my next post.

Overall I had a good time.  The players I met were nice and laid back.  The tables were nice with some interesting terrain sets.  It looked like the 30K tables had some really great terrain while the 40k ones focused on easily mass produced. There is nothing wrong with this since they had good amount of Line Of Sight blocking pieces which is my biggest complaint when I go to a lot of other tournaments.  They also have a ton of tables.  I would guess over a hundred total just for 40k.

you cant' see through the center terrain pieces but ruled that they are easily moved through.  nice buff for some mobile units Sucks for gun lines though..
When I got there I walked around drooling over all the cool big models.  I saw several warlords, even more Reavers and a few warhounds spattered around the tables. I was disappointed on the number of flying hive tyrants that I saw but that is the competitive way to play Tyranids.

It was also disturbing on how many multiple Knight armies or Stormsurges were being used.  I guess we have entered the age of the Knight in 40k.

Fellow Blogger Greggles ork army. 2 knights!!!! but made up with 2 gorkanauts
While I was disappointed with all the knights, I did see some cool armies.  My favorite was a Mechanicum list that had 2 dominars.  I was so envious of this list.  Maybe one day I will make a Mechanicum list but not anytime soon. At least, not until Forgewold is sold locally.  I just don't like big purchases and that is the only way to do Forgeworld and not get spanked on shipping.
small but mighty

Those Dominars smash face.
There were also some nice converted models out there to drool over. I played against an old school Necron army.  They had all metal models except for a ghost ark, a Stalker and the C'tan.  pretty cool and well painted.

I nice old school Necron list with a custom C'tan

Puppet's War Knights. I think they were standing in as knights though they look more like riptides.

Look a Heriodule! so cuuuuute.

They added in a smaller Star Destroyer to go with the huge one from last year.  I am not sure which class it is supposed to represent.  it was cool though.

The vendor hall was cool.  The bit guy was pretty expensive.  There were some MDF sellers there that were doing some great work.  Unfortunately most of it were dice trays and army trays.  Army trays are cool if you only have 10-20 models but when your troops alone fill the tray it is time to look for other alternatives.
A cool resin castle piece.  If only I needed castle pieces.

Finally there was the painting competition. There were some cool models here.  If I did a better job of taking photos you would see what I mean.

This is what I will do if I ever get an storm surge.

A cool paint scheme for Skitarii.

I want to make these into ork Dreads.

A very cool diorama

So my final verdict on the Nova Open is rather positive.  I had a good time playing in the narrative, I meet some cool people and talked a lot of shop.  I am glad I went.

In the next post I will talk about my games in the narrative.  Finishing with a few shots of my Necron force.

Have a good one.

nova games

At the Nova Open I played three games in the Night Fighters Event.  This event spanned three nights and incorporated with the Narrative Warlords and Recon events.  The first two games I played alone against a single opponent.  The third game I was paired up with another team member and we took on a team from the other faction.
The games over all were interesting.  There were eight missions to play and civilians placed on the field for infamy or fame points.  They had a kill point mission and a maelstrom mission but they have 4 unique missions that were interesting and made it more challenging.

My first game I was matched up with a ten droppod list with Calgar and Tigirius.  Tigi had a spell that lowered my invuln down by 3 and every turn he targeted a unit and his grav centurions then ripped that unit to shreds.

I also didn't think to bubble wrap my ghost arks an the melta squads finished them quickly as well.

My opponent was a fun guy.  He knew it was a hard list.  I know I played it completely wrong.  I would now have my warriors out of their rides protecting it from meltas.  The wraiths could have used cover better so even if they lost the 3++ they could of had a 4+ cover.  I could have used the veil to move my command squad in his backfield where they could assault the thunder fire cannons.  so many mistakes.

My second game I played another Necron player,  He did not play a Decurion which caught me a bit surprised. He had a C'tan and a destroyer cult detachment.  While I was taking out his forces pretty well I positioned myself poorly for the final turn and almost lost the game by objectives.  I think if I was a bit more aggressive I might have done a bit better.

the third game was against the same Necron player and his buddy who was playing a Khorne demonkin army.  He had a huge dog unit with a lord and herald on juggernauts.  I was teamed up with a Ravenwing army.

I castled up in the corner waiting for turn 2 when my partner would come in.  I lined up across from the chaos army.  Thinking about it I might have done better going up against the Necron list and let the Ravenwing take care of the doggies.  They huge pack of dogs just tore through my ranks.  I just couldn't do enough wounds to it to slow it down.

Hind site being 20/20 I think if we focused on the Necrons we could have pulled out a victory.  I kept feeding units to the big dog pile and they wiped me off the board.  Most of the Ravenwing was still in tack.  The mission was a kill point mission which hurt even more.

So I ended 1-2 for the weekend.  I had a good time and the guys I played were competitive but not one of "Those guys" I didn't have to face a knight so I was happy about that.

I would recommend the Narrative for anyone looking for some fun games and great players.

Tomorrow I will have my list with photos.

Nova Army

In my final post about the Nova Open, I will talk about the army I played.  It was not unbeatable, proven by my 1-2 record, but it was cheesy. Lets take a look...

First off I had a Decurion Detachment. The 4+ reanimation for my whole army felt dirty.  This alone is why I will not use the Decurion in a friendly game.  I feel the 5+ is okay and the fact that you have to pay a cryptek tax for the 4+ for one unit feels right.

I was also running two canoptek harvest formations which gives my wraiths the same 4+ reanimation roll as the rest of the army.  This makes them even more resilient.  If I didn't make some mistakes  moving them out of the range of my spyders I would have fared much better.

I like the big  squads of immortals.  Their shots  helped me out of some tight situations.  But for pure survivability a min squad of warriors in a ghost are is a better choice.

The jetbikes did okay. As I have heard, 5 tomb blades are not enough to make them threat.  They are okay nuisance units or objective holders but they just don't have the number of shots to be reliable.

The nightscythe was also not helpful.  I would rather had an annihilation barge  but, in the Decurion, the only way to get one is in the formation with the doomsday ark.  I don't have a doomsday ark and don't think I ever will so no barge for me when I play the Decurion.

Overall, I don't think I did this list justice.  I feel that I could have done better.  In the end, I just need more practice with the Necrons to know how to play them.  I used the big squad of Lychguard and a overlord but they rarely do anything.  I think they have never make their points back once.  I am always to afraid to advance them or they get charged by terminators.  Sure the 3+ will help them survive but they don't do anything back which leads to a huge slapfest.

I am going to switch up my army for next time.  We will see how the destroyers and Praetorians do next time I play them.

I hope you liked my Nova Open Coverage. I will try to do more for Shorehammer.  Have a good week.

Showcase: Destroyer Lord

$

This weekend I painted  my destroyer lord.  I made a short video on the rotating pedestal. I left some better photos below.

I thought I would give him a bronze plated body instead of the usual black body of my destroyers.  This will help him stand out even more on the table.  I also painted the exhaust port blue to further set him apart.

While as he stands, he is complete. There are two things I am not happy about with this model.  The first is the head. Unfortunately, it is metal model which makes it a pain to remove the head.  After I finish all of the destroyers I might come back to replace it.  I think I want to add one of the more decorated heads and angle it more upright.

The other problem is the flat carapace on the back.  If you look at all the new Necron models they tend to have circuitry engraved on their carapace.  I think I am going to try to get some stencils and add it to all of the destroyer bodies. I first have to find the stencil then I need to figure out what I want to add.

All of this is for another time though.  My lord is now ready to lead his destroyer cult to kill all things that live.  The Dynasty shall rule forever!

Blood Angel Rumors

$

So Over on Faeit 212 they have posted up some formations that are are supposedly in the new Angels Blade supplement.  After a short read through, I so want to start a Blood Angels army.

Here are the two formations that have me drooling.

Golden Host
Dante or Sanguinor
2-5 sanguinary guards units
Special rules :
No reserve roll you choose the turn they arrive and everybody arrive in DS
They can charge the turn they DS but count as disordered charge

Archangels orbital intervention force
3 termi squads of any sort
Special rules :
MUST be kept in DS reserve
one single reserve roll
The termi may either shoot twice (not necessarily at the same target) OR charge the turn they DS but this will count as disordered charge

The first one is all assault units with power weapons that can choose when they come in and the assault that turn.  All of my tyranids (ok maybe not biovores) a shaking their claws at GW.  The ability to get into assault the turn you arrive is just broken.  If I am not mistaken they also have a 2+ save.   They also get to choose when they come in so I would assume turn one is an option.

This is just an awesome formation.  I would assume that it is quite expensive in points.   It will definitely be hard to counter. Maybe if they assault a unit and are left out in the open, They could be brought down in the next shooting phase.  It is still hard to counter that many 2+ saves.

The second formation is also awesome.  Just think thunder, hammer and shield termies coming in from deep strike and then assaulting. If  you want, you can have some shooty ones as well.  I don't know marines so I would assume one special gun and/or maybe one heavy gun per squad.  I know if given a choice I will go assault Terminators all day long.

I am kind of glad that I don't play Blood Angels. I know I would want to play these formations but I think they are too powerful.  I know that they are needed in the current competitive meta. It was better when maybe one or two units could assault from deepstrike.

Thinking of a counter for this is tough. The first hard counter would be a flyer heavy list the five tyrants probably could hold their own against a list like this. Another one might be a dark angel list in the formation that allows overwatch at full ballistic skill.  If you can get units with a lot of AP2 weapons you might be able to take them out before they get to you.  I think that a knight army will crumble before all those thunder hammers.  If eldar keep their bikes in small groups then scatter bikes might work.   Unfortunately none of there are options for my armies.  ouch!

I am unsure of the costs of units but even if each unit was 300pts you could do a golden host formation with 4 units of guards at 1500pt games. You probably could run one Golden Host and Archangels force as well.

I do believe this will bring the assault phase back.  At least for these formations.

WIP: Skitarii Peltasts

I was excited yesterday,  My Peltasts upgrades came in.  I am eager to get these on the table ant give them a try.  I had assembled the bodies already so all I needed to do was clean them off and glue them on.

There were four identical sprues of back packs and on different one.  I was not thrilled with how they attached to the sprue.  I had to scrape out a chunk in between the two energy chambers.  It wasn't hard but I had to be delicate so I didn't remove details.

They also gave you eleven heads They are all pretty much the came there was a notch on each in the back I had to cut off.

There were eleven guns. Ten were two handed and one was held with one hand. With those they had the accompanying  arms. The odd one out had its free hand pointing.

I cleaned them up.  There was minimal flash.  Just a few vent chambers to cut off.   I let them soak in simple green for an hour them washed them off.  Hopefully the release agent is all washed off.

I plan on base coating these tonight and then the fun of painting starts.

I am not sure how I want these to be painted.  I thought I might paint them up like the rest of my skitarii but they are not regular skitarii.  I thought about painting their robes in the color of my Alphas with their alpha done in light grey.  The other option I am toying with is keeping the robes the standard colors and use either a dark bronze (like my deathmarks) or silver (like the rest of my Necrons)

What do you think?  I will probably paint up a couple of test models. If you can think of another option I would love to hear it.

Rumors: Genestealer Cult

$

The rumors keep rolling in on the Genestealer cult release next week.  Today over on Faeit 212 they have the content of the two kits that are coming out.lets take a look.

Genestealer Cult Acolyte Hybrids:
-5 Acolyte Hybrids with Autopistols, Close Combat Weapons, Blasting charges and Rending Claws
-Can also be built as Hybrid Metamorphs with autopistols, metamorph Talons, Blasting Charges and Reding Claws
-Options for a Acolythe or Metamorph Leader with 2 Special Heads that can be armed with a Bonesword
-optional Handflamers, 1 heavy rock saw, 1 heavy rock drill, 1 heavy rock cutter.
-40$

genestealer Cult Neophyte Hybrids:
-10 Neophytes with autoguns, autopistols and blasting charges.
-optional seismis cannon, heavy stubber or mining laser aswell as 10 shotguns
-options for a neophyte leader with various wargear.
-40$

These prices are close to skitarii prices with the rangers being $38 for ten models and the rust stalkers being $38 for five models.  It is a bit expensive also considering if you can foing the overkill box for $165 for 16 Neophytes and 12 acolytes along with other cult figures and some space marines.

The one thing you get with the new boxes are some new options.  I don't know what metamorph talons, heavy rock saws, drills or cutter are but I am betting they will be advantageous to have. I just don't know if I should try to strike early and try to get the overkill box and sell off the marines or do I just sit and get each box and hope there is a start collecting box for them. I know that if I get the boxed game I will have a decent start to an army where I can either buy a box to make all of the special weapon guys or just buy individual models for those special weapons.

I have already used my hobby money through oct since I picked up the ironstrider for Dreadtober.  So picking up the game will eat into the hobby money for next year unless I can sell some stuff to offset the cost.  The bottom line is the Genestealers are coming and my hive fleet are going to welcome them with open arms.

Finally we get some pictures of the new boxes and codex. Taken from War of Sigmar who got them from GW facebook.

First off is the codex.  A cool picture of a magus and patriarch. Nothing really new there.  I am excited to get this book.

Next, we see the Acolytes. We see the bonesword, lashwhip and the saw.  I am guessing that other one is armed with blasting charges.  It will be a nice kit with some good options.  I will grab a couple of boxes even if I get the Overkill set.

Lastly, we see the Neophytes.  I am not as impressed with the idfferences between them and the overkill counterparts.  They do have some new options.  If I want some shotguns, I will have to get this box, but I am not sure if I will want that option. They do have the Seismis cannon that might be the big gun on the right and the icon. I guess I will need to see the rules before completely writing these off.  Of course if I don't get the Overkill box I will be getting these.

So these kits are really cool but not too much different than the Overkill box.  Hopefully there will be some rule leaks soon and we can find out how much of the IG stuff they get to use.  Heck, I might have a good sized chunk of the army with my IG army.

Looking forward to seeing the new rules and formations.  can't wait!

Rumor: More Genestealer Cult

$

So this weekend we got a few more images to get us drooling over the new genestealer cult. The above picture shows us the two new variants of the new vehicle as well as a Russ tank.  Pretty cool. All of these photos are on many sites but I got them from War of Sigmar.

First up we see the back of the box for the Neophytes and Acolytes.  I like how they show all the options for the weapons.  We see both the variations of the Metamorphs and acolytes. I am would guess the metamorph options go along the tyranid rules.  Lash whips and crushing claws are fun for the whole cult.

For those who still want to use tools we see the heavy mining gear like the rock cutter, drill, and saw.  There is even a bone sword for the leader.  pretty cool.

On the Neophyte box we see the new options as well.  We see the seismic cannon, a webber, various power weapons, some shotguns and the trusty mining laser.  Both set contain icon banners with I am interested to see what rules go with it. There is speculation the seismic cannon is a grav cousin.

Next up are some pictures from the Oct White Dwarf

Here we get a better look at a lot of the weapons. It is a bit blurry and I don't see anything different from the back of the boxes except the power hammer which looks like an aberrant from Overkill

Then we see the new Truck.  I love the looks of this guy.  It is jam packed with cultists and it looks like a genestealer popping out the side compartment. The two variants seem to differ by weapon options and the Drilldozer Blade.  I would like to see the rules for the drilldozer.  I am wondering if it is close to an ork Deff Rolla.

Looking at that data entry I am not sure who it is supposed to transport.  It is not an assault vehicle so I don't think the acolytes are the ideal cargo.  On the other hand it only holds six troops so the if the min size of a neophyte unit is ten they won't be in it either. Maybe the demo charges will make it an assault vehicle.   If so, then pack in the Acolytes and metamorphs! Heck, use some Genestealers!

The last image seems to be the table of content from the codex.

Out of these we haven't seen an Iconward.  The rest have been covered by the Overkill box or the IG codex. Looking at this I could probably field an army using my IG and Tyranid forces until I get the newer units.  There are some rumors about making Neophytes with guard units.  I have some Leman Russ tanks and Chimeras.  I could load them up with some genestealer and give them some protection. My space hulk Broodlord is a good stand in for the Patriarch and I could use one of my wyndvane psychics as a magus.

I am interested in the formation and to find out more about their gear.  Since the codex come out this weekend I would assume the leak will happen in the net couple of days.

I am not sure how powerful this army is going to be.  I doubt it will be eldar good.  Until we see the formation and new rules we won't have a complete picture.  I am optimistic.

Dreadtober: Declaration and Planning

$

It is getting close now.  I have purchased my kit and am trying to clear off the workbench to make room for my project.  That project is a Sydonian Dragoon / Ironstrider Balistarius.

I have already done one of these but everything is better in pairs.  I plan on making it able to use either option as I did with my first one.  So the first step was to make another body so I can swap them out.

Once I have this, I will need to build the model.  I plan on doing the other stance with the legs so I don't have to repose it.  If I get a third one, I might need to try to figure that out. Along with the model I will create the rocks for the base to match my other vehicles.

After building is painting.  Nothing exciting here just going to match my other walker.

This is not as ambitious as last years project. It is something my armies need and something I can afford so a win win.

Keep an eye here and over on Broken Brush for all the Dreadtober fun.

Showcase: Necron Destroyers

This week I am trying to clear off my desk before #Dreadtober starts up.  First on the block are some Necron Destroyers.

I have not done the edge highlighting on them but they are table ready.  I can always go back and add the highlighting.

I have added the decals to this group.  I used micro sol and set and added a coat of black paint but they still looks like a decal.  I don't know what I am going to do.

I magnetized the heavy gauss cannon and regular gauss cannon so I can take either option.

So three destroyers are complete.  I still have the Peltast and Praetorians to finish up.  I will keep working them off this week and start up the Ironstrider next week.

Operation:Clear Off the Desk is still in full swing.  I wanted finish off my praetorians that I picked up from the Nova Open.  Now that they are finished all that is left is my peltasts. But before I move on to them lets look at my finished Praetorians.

I like this guy.  I find that his pose is cool. he was the first one done. he has been highlighted so when I have the time I can go back and finish detailing the other models.

If I built this guy I would have chose a different pose.  I think it just looks akward.

This one screams, "Come at me bro!" He looks like he is ready for anything coming his way.

I took these pictures with my wife's phone and I think I will keep using it.  They look a lot better than my older Samsung.

My next post will be my first #Dreadtober post.  I should have the dragoon at least partially assembled.  Until then have a good weekend.

#dreadtober: First update

It is that time of year again,  Time to build and paint a dread type model in honor of the season.  In previous post i stated that I am going to build the sydonian dragoon.

I took the time this weekend to assemble the main body of the walker. It went together fairly easy.  I took notice on the leg pose so I do have the same stance as my other walker.

So the main part is built but I want to spiffy up the base before it gets primed.  Before I move on though I need to some how make s second torso so I can use both versions of the dragoon.

I attached a bit of sprue on the torso for venting and started my two part mold. I am not good at making molds.  I am not sure if it is my molds, my resin, or just that I am not doing it right

This is my first attempt. While the torso looked decent the deformed lower torso did not fit on the dragoon. So I have made a second attempt.  Hopefully I will be able to get something that will work and I can move onto the painting.

Have a good week and stay tuned for more updates.

#Dreadtober: Building continues

I continued to work on my Sydonian Dragoon.  I made my mold and had my two bodies ready to complete the building and then I ran into a problem.

On my first build, the legs supported the bodies well enough that no magnets were needed to hold the driver in the saddle.  On this build any movement had a chance to unseat him so I made an executive decision and add some magnets.

First up I had to prep the drivers and cut off the lower torso so they can sit flush on the walker.

Then I added green stuff between the legs prepare for the magnet.  I added the magnets in all pieces. while the Balistarius's driver looks a little odd in the waist I am not worried about it.

The dragoon looks good.

With that completed, I am now ready to start painting.  I still need to decorate the base.  I need to make some rocky terrain for the base, but that can be done later.

So at the end of week one I have the model assembled and ready for paint.

WIP: Genestealer Cult

If you have been following my blog you would know I am excited by the new genestealer cult that came out this week. Since I am watching my hobby budget, I thought I would start with an Overkill box set.
I have gone over the bonuses of the Overkill box before. It is a great way to get some bodies on the field.  If you can find someone to split a box with you I highly recommend it.

The one thing that this box doesn't have is some of the special wargear. You get 12 standard Acolytes but you don't get the heavy melee weapons, icon, or leader.  All of these things are things I would want in my squads.

The model go together rather well.  They are highly detailed.  The one drawback I found was the amount of mold lines. The worst are the ones going straight down the forehead of the models.  I  worry about removing details of the head crests while I remove the line.

The Patriarch model is a lot like the other brood lord models out there.  For this version they added the brain detail and a large tail. They continue to have them crouching atop a random bit of terrain.

The genestealer is just a plain genestealer.  It does come with a 32mm base so it is different than the rest of my genestealers.  At some point I will probably grab some of those extension rings so I will be up to date and uniform across the army.

I am wondering how to paint these guys.  They will be part of my hive fleet Sivak so I am going to do a light blue skin.  I am thinking a dark green mining suit with yellow cloth.  I should have a test model up sometime next week.

So with this box and what I have in IG and Tyranids almost have a 1500pt army.  I need a Sentinel for the Neophyte Cavalcade formation. I could use some more neophytes but guardsmen work just as well. I also need some metamorphs for the Subterranean Uprising formation. Not a bad start.

I have started to block out the colors on the Ironstrider.

I first started with the copper and then moved on to the purple, I hope to have the grey and silver parts painted by this weekend.

Next week I will finish up the strider and start on the pilots.  Sorry for the lack of progress but I am still on time.

WIP: Neophyte Hybrid

As a hobby butterfly, I have the need to flit between projects.  So, even though I have my Dreadtober project to continue, I was compelled to get some test models done for my genestealer cult.
I want these cultist to be a extension of my hive fleet.  This means to me that instead of purple skin tones on the neophytes, I should have a blue-ish hue.

Neophyte

I was unsure on the combination but I think that the green and tan work well. I think the blue skin works with the rest of my scheme. I am wondering if the color choice for the tongue is correct. One concern is that the blue skin is too deep of a blue. I wonder if I need to use a flat white and then add the wash to tint the skin instead a light blue that is tinted with the wash. I just want them to fit in with my Tyranids and they are painted a bright blue.

Neophyte

I am not sure how I am going to base these guys.  I have thought of using the celluclay to give them a rocky terrain.  I am concerned that it might be too busy and draw from the model. I also thought about using the GW texture paint but I think the cost for the result is just too much.Jeff Tibbetts over on Tibbs Forge mentioned some car body filler that might have the result that looks close to what I am picturing for my cult.

Neophyte

I think I am getting a little better picking out the details on these models.  I guess all those skitarii have helped me refine my fine motor skills.  I also the way the wash improves the models.  I don't always use it correctly but when I do I am happy.

Neophyte

There is a massive glare on the tops of these models so I apologize. I am still trying to get used to the black background on the light box.

I get to try them out this weekend so, stay tuned for my first impressions next week. Until then...
